I do like hydrofoils and do think they're an under rated and under used technology.
But like everything it has its limits, and that is wave height.
And of course range / duration in electric power guise, which doesn't seem to be stated or referred to in this fluffy video.
The spec looks promising but it would be interesting to see how it handled any kind of sea state. 100 km is a decent range but we all know things change out there, head out in flat calm only to be met by some wind over tide on the way home.
Hopefully it can be developed more so we see something bigger and with accommodation. Unfortunately I can see that becoming untenable once scaled up.
Thanks Kev. I like that very much. I'm tempted to order one as a toy. As far as I can tell from website they have sold 3 of the super dooper €22,500 model, 5,5kw, and there is a base model too at €15k with 3.7kw Presumably the motor is Torqeedo but I don't know.
You gotta love the website: "Unlike the Titanic, Quadrofoil is actually unsinkable. The hull is hollow, so even in the worst case scenarios, Quadrofoil will stay afloat" Er, ok. Was Titanic not also hollow?
And "Foil design places the center of gravity 8 meters above the vessel, ensuring Quadrofoil to stay horizontal at all times" - WTF?
And lastly "You don’t just get an empty vessel. Two life jackets, a paddle and a safety whistle are included." Yes you read that right - included for the €22,500 is a whistle no less!
But from an earlier thread you might remember an ex engineer for Condor? He was saying that maintenance was a nightmare and that cats were more efficient, hence why they took over.
What a cracking toy. If I had somewhere to put it I would get one! The need to make a swim platform friendly sized one. Preferably that sits over a Williams 325 rib!
