None of the tenders have outboards - I assume they're banned. He might do a bit better by not trying to pull as hard, and keep his oars in the rowlocks.

Might be better to have a more efficient boat if the racing is so close! Or a fitter more competent rower?

Light is quicker and easier to get back onboard. IMHO, trying to row a soft bottom inflatable at any speed is nearly impossible.

It doesn't matter how quickly he rowed - That catamaran is a rocket... almost the same performance as an Anderson 22!

That is some impressive rowing, would soon get worn out! as Keen_Ed says it's nearly impossible to get some real speed in those things!

But being fast and light think how fatigued everyone would be, especially the runners. Nothing to do having just run up 3 mountains in 3 days of course.

Doesn't that depend on the sea conditions. That was a large cat and whilst it won't have the comfort in a gale that a deep, long keeled monohull will I think it would have been plenty comfortable for the crew to rest in the conditions they seemed to be heading out in.
Also speed is relative, a 45 foot cat will be twice the speed of a cruising 35 foot monohull but not considered fast in cat terms.

Compared to our Zodiak zoom the oars and rowlocks on that inflatable seemed really good. I know he did manage to pull the oar out but he was giving it some welly, What make of inflatable was it?

Surely the best part of being a cat with buggerall under the water is that he could have got a lot closer in to the jetty, minimising the amount of rowing required. Or is there some kind of regulation of the yacht waiting area? Seemed like they had a long way to row...

I'm not clear from reading the rules, why the one left on board the boat can't sail as close as practical (allowing for other boats, the exclusion zone etc) and pick them up from a point close in.. There'd also be a good start with boat being "under way".

Perhaps if the wind is light the optimum is get the boat as far out as possible as the dinghy may go faster than the yacht if fluky winds close to shore

I think the boat was under way - that's why they secured with the painter well forward as you would do with a sea-boat on a ship. Genoa rolled up initially so that the dinghy was able to catch up, then I think (I haven't re-watched the video) they unrolled it while the runners and rower were climbing on board.
