Much much worse in Devon. Who said that this was the sunny county?
I can't remember getting rained or blown off last year but I've well lost count this year. I've even thought of taking the boat out early and saving a bit of money!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Thinking about it, for me, better than last year. In June, last year and this year, I sailed, single handed, from Chichester to Falmouth and back. Both years I was affected by high winds, but they were more predictable this year, and a bit lighter. Also last year there was also a lot more heavy rain. This year more sun, and a lot drier conditions.
The week before last, I went on a YC cruise to Yarmouth, the weather was good, the wind a little on the strong side, but on the Friday a good sail from Yarmouth to Bembridge. Then last Wednesday, a cracking sail in the Eastern Solent with glorious sunshine.
I reckon on balance this year is better than last, well it has been for me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
"With just 116 hrs sunshine at Prestatyn July 2008 was the dullest July on record - 60 hours below average and 8 below the previous lowest total of 124 hours. It averages out at about 3.5 hours a day."
I think it all depends on where in the UK the question is asked, but I suppose on reflection it's not WORSE than last year...but in a different way, it's still upsetting many people's plans. Right now for example we'd normally be living aboard for most of the time...but instead just twiddling our thumbs at home (hence all the posts recently!). Not that it's BAD weather, but just not very enjoyable. Will probably go back today rain or no rain, as getting bored.
Worse than last year, F5 - F9's keeping us marina bound even when the sun shines, rain, rain, drizzle & fog! is all that apears on the forcast posted at our marina.
Managed a few days out but not the balmy summer days we all remember.
Hope it gets better before the end of the season, thinking of leaving the boat afloat over the winter in case conditions improve! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
UK Outlook for Sunday 10 Aug 2008 to Tuesday 19 Aug 2008:
After a wet night for many, brighter and showery weather will spread from the west during Sunday. Showery weather will continue into Monday, with the risk of some prolonged and heavy showers. However, sunny intervals are also expected, especially in the east. It will be breezy in many parts with strong winds in the west and south. Unsettled weather will continue through the middle of next week with further rain or showers at times. Some short dry and sunny interludes are also expected, the best of which occurring in the east. Temperatures through this period will be near average to rather cool. More unsettled weather is expected to continue through the second part of next week and over the weekend, with it staying on the cool side.
2008 is a write off. This isn't going away...it's going to be crap for the next month at least...has been the last 6 weeks....was thinking of buying another boat if I sell mine..right now I'm keeping the cash it's just too expensive to have something sitting in a marina not being used especially atm.
finally managed to get some hull work done, finished the worst of the welding now working on the paint so praying for reasonable weather to get some paint on.
have looked at the synoptic charts and there is another low heading this way from the North atlantic with a BIG cold front leading the way. But a High is hovering around the North Biscay area tha could drag some warmer air in our direction, cant imagine it stabilising though..... at least not over us.
I have the kids for two weeks starting on Monday what the hell am I going to do with them stuck on the boat in the yard for two weeks... They'll hate it (and me)
Mc Donalds and playstation here I come !
If anyone knows for any work going in sunnier climes let me know !!!!!

We reckon the weather of itself has been fine, sun and little rain -its just the.......wind! massive sw or nothing at all was the theme for our cruise -we got as far a solent before surrendering to the crowds and wind.
Last year we had a great two weeks in september....heres hoping
For the second year running our 'summer cruise' was cancelled due to strong wind warnings all week. Not so much rain as last year, perhaps, but more days with high winds.
West Mersea YC Round the Island race was cancelled due to strong wind warnings in 2007 and 2006. And from the long range forecast, I don't hold out much hope for 2008..........!
We are going through similar emotions. Our son's county cricket season (he plays Under 16's) has so far had one days play out of a possible five. Next week isn't looking good either....
Our summer cruise is scheduled for the last two weeks of August and the long term weather outlook is "unsettled" according to the met office, with no promise of any improvement to come. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Here in the SW we've had one good week in June and another at the end of July which is certainly better than last year. But stats show that July rainfall was 2.5 times greater than average for Devon. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
