So boatshed are advertising this as a Hunter Sonata.

Hunter Boats Sonata for sale UK, Hunter Boats boats for sale, Hunter Boats used boat sales, Hunter Boats Sailing Yachts For Sale 1978 Hunter Sonata - Apollo Duck

It states it's a sonata on the title and when you get into the detail it quotes the owner saying its the same style and size as a sonata.

It's clearly a home built and designed boat that shares nothing with a sonata other than they both have a mast and keel. They are different sizes , different designers, different construction materials. It would be a bit like me claiming my mgc27 is a halberg rassy.

Am I being overly grumpy in thinking a broker shouldn't support this description?

I've emailed them and they say it's clear in the detail.

It might fool someone with less experience. TS a good idea.

Is the broker a registered member of one of the professional Associations ?

I find it surprising that any "broker" would present such a misleading description. Right down to claiming that builder is Hunter, the make is Hunter Boats and the model is Sonata.
Misrepresentation without a doubt though whether it would fool anyone that is not actually brain dead is open to debate.

I appreciate that Boat Sales representatives should really know what they are selling, and there's no real excuse where a large amount of money may be involved, but I've had some fairly recent dealings with that particular company in more than one County. On both occasions I found the Reps to be nice enough but not that knowledgeable ( see a recent post by me about a boat with a puddle on the cabin top...:D )

Without being too unfair to all the Sales Reps, it's possible that he/she wouldn't know a Sonata if one fell on them, at least that's my impression.

" The rudder is attached to that extra bit on the keel"... ( An Eastern County Rep)
" yes mate, that's called a skeg"....

Before you go down any official complaints route, perhaps you should have a word with the Sales Rep and ask them a few simple questions.

It's clear when you view the ad on Boatshed that those are the words of the owner rather than the broker, although uncritically reprinting them verbatim raises questions of its own.

Why do you care ?
It is indeed clear in the details.
And it look like a lot of fun for that money.

Having looked at the add it is being made clear throughout that it is NOT a Sonata. The headline in Boatshed is reasonable, in as much that someone looking for a Sonata may decide to go for this instead. It would be difficult to headline it saying that it tastes like butter but it ain't

Why do I care? I don't really, other than I was looking at other boats from boatshed and made me worried about their descriptions. If you are happy to stick a home designed and built boat in a category for a completely different boat and call it a different boat then what else might you get wrong?

I just think it very odd.

It's no worse than the general standard of journalism, and there's clearly no intent to deceive, because the boat's history is clearly laid out in the text, so probably better than general journalism. I suspect the headline is because she could be of interest to anyone wanting a Sonata, and that "misrepresentation" means she'll come up when searching for one

She looks pretty good to me and if I were looking for something similar, I'd be interested

If you’re in the market for a Sonata that’ll be the most expensive one in the country but maybe because as clearly stated in the text it’s not actually a Sonata.

I’d pick your battles OP, if I had travelled to see it then got mugged with the ‘not actually a Sonata’ info yes I’d be upset but as it’s clear as day in the ad what it is I’d say no cause for concern.
