Lets not forget Mathew Flinders who surveyed Botany Bay,Sydney harbour and much of south New South Wales in a 10 ft 6 inches dinghy with no one there to rescue him and Bass and one seaman.
They then went off and circumnavigated Tasmania including the discovery of the Bass Straits in a 27 ft 6 inch boat.

I guess the many earlier trips failed to meet some criteria of the record. I can guess, but I'd love to know definitively which.

Does a singlehanded Drascombe count? How about Webb Chiles' crossing of the Pacific?
