is this old hat or not?

Wow yes, a lot more expensive and he actually seems to be selling them at that price too!

Looks like I should start selling on ebay.

I see you do a humidity and temperature sensor, could it be hooked up to a) send a txt when humidity goes above a certain level (dampness) and then turn on a dehumidifier or tubular heater?

That particular product, no. But I do have a product that I haven't placed on the website that detects humidity and at a certain level it could turn on a dehumidifier for a period of time. In order to send texts etc, one enters the realms of more expensive products and so far I have been attempting to keep everything at low prices and therefore high volume sales, but it is food for thought.

There's another on ebay with 7 outs and 4 ins that could do a host of intelligent monitor, react and report type functions, especially if combined with an Arduino or similar. There are others with UARTS on that would allow for very complex control messages to be sent from a small app. Around £80 seems to be the going price for dedicated gsm gate controllers / relays boards which are based on this type of technology so if you can make them for £25 you have a ready market and decent margin not only in the marine sector but also the security market which is much larger which could fund your development of other ideas.

The trick is finding good applications that help sell it, for example I can remotely lock my boat, turn the alarm on/off, monitor its gps position, remote anchor watch while ashore, check the bilge pump status, cut off the fuel supply and even listen to the waves gently lapping its hull using very cheap gsm based electronics - total cost around £50/60 of bits plus a bit of time wiring it all up. Not so long ago the technology for this would have been prohibitively expensive, its not the hardware now that's the limiting factor but the imagination to create products with it and how its marketed.
