I have heard that they are trying to oust the live aboards from Ipswich (Haven and Neptune) and that the thefts from boats have increased.

Anyone else heard the same story and do you think they are related. Liveaboards can act as unofficial security guards.

don't know, but am friends with one set of liveaboards in Haven so will ask next time we speak to them.....

Neptune has never been that friendly towards Liveaboards, hence most of them migrating to Haven.... don't know where they'll all go if it is true, as not many of the other Orwell marinas would be that welcoming either I suspect, or if they are, hardly convenient locations for liveaboards....

I have recently been in talks with a certain brokerage at IHM and it was mentioned in conversation that they daren't leave props on the boats when ashore.

Could be a measure of the economic climate as historically it is reckoned that theft/burglary increases during a recession.

We had a problem with stolen outboards at Tollesbury last year and I understand that has continued to be a problem on the East Coast.

They are also moving them from Paglesham. One the one hand they are a useful security measure, on the other they do make the place feel less like a welcoming boatyard.

I am a liveaboard and take umbridge that you are suggesting we are all gypsies or tramps. My wife and I cruise our boat as well as live on it and have been happy to do so for the past 8 years. I can show you some louts and idiots who may well have boats, but they live in houses.
Like all walks of life, there are a few who spoil things for the many, but please dont tar us all with the same brush.

I'm with you on this one.
Didn't like to take exception too much as the poster obviously needs to feel superior to others.
I bet some liveaboard vessels are worth far more than many houses - especially in the current economic climate. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm with you and didn't understand the comment. Having someone about in a marina whenever you go to the boat is a pleasure, especially on the cold, wet, windy days when no other soul seem to care about their boats. I have always seen my boats as a seond home, and I envy those who are lucky enough to be able to make them the first home.

Thank you Pyro James and wing diver, On our Marina there are a few liveaboards and since I have been there, the only thieving has been done from boats on the hard standing, away from the pontoon area. Nothing, to my knowledge, has been thieved from boats laying afloat, could this be that there is permanent security on the pontoons? My guess is the scallywags who performed the scullduggery up on the Hard standing where house dwellers.!!!!!!!!

Have to agree as well....
particularly as you used to be my neighbour /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
as you know at that time the boat was never locked...which was handy occasionally /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

there are a few rogue characters about as liveaboards though....I'm sure WE know a few /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

but thats all part of lifes rich pattern....

Do your near neighbours and friends know you mentioned them in this thread.....scallywags /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

i heard that the biggest rouge at lowestoft was a Chelsea supporter /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Unfortunately there are always going to be people who look down on others through some false sense of superiority,id love to be able to talk swimbo into flogging the farm and going liveaboard, the closest i got was suggesting buying a field next to a tidal river but alas eveb that has been poopad /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
