Is this a new idea?

My colleagues and I have expanded our boat share and want to
include more people. We have set up a web site and would appreciate
peoples comments/feedback. You never know you may want to investigate

if i understand it, you divvy up the running costs which include repairs and maintenance? it avoids the problem of one or more of the capital shareholders being unable to fund new equipment .... but nobody owns the boat other than the single owner which wouldn't encourage taking appropriate care etc ? ..

The "share contribution" subsidises the berthing fees (not cheap on
a 39 footer), insurance & radio licence. Minor damage / breakages are
paid by the person(s) responsible, and diesel, gas & provisions are
obviously for the account of the individuals who had the benefit.
In our share it is very rare for maintenance to go to a boatyard as we
are all practical engineering types who muck in and get the jobs done
ourselves.
The owner pays for all items of a capital nature i.e. he has just bought
4 additional lifejackets which the sharers will not have to pay for but
will be able to use.
The care aspect is down to trust, integrity and the shared joy of sailing a superb boat. You have to want to look after it as if it were your own. If you love sailing and boats this is not difficult.
Work out weekend chartering costs for a NAJAD 390 and make the
comparison.
I was a founder member last year and it has given me so many sailing
opportunities that (apart from crewseekers) would have cost me a
fortune. You are more than welcome to come down and meet us and the boat. I think you'll find it a real opportunity.

Have I go this correct, at maximum membership the members will contribute £17,000 p/a into the kitty? Then there will be additional income from ad-hoc chartering to non members.

Do you claim this is a "not for profit" scheme?

The web site does not explain how the 16 members will be allocated equitable timeslots during the peak season.

How many capital owners will also be allowed to book days?

Having said that the £100 per day charter rate sounds attractive, particularly if 4 or 5 Scuttlebuttians get together.

It doesn't look wildly profitable to me. Take out the usual overheads, and a much higher maintenance, insurance and depreciation allowance as well. Plus, I presume, there is professional cleaning and laundering at each change over.

It seems fair and the personal cost reasonable. I think the only point that immediately comes into question is the limited use at any given time, weekend or midweek, so your payment won't get you an annual holiday.

As the owner of the boat here are some additional comments. The idea is to strike a balance. Lets say no off peak mebers came along then all peak spaces need filling. If all 10 off peak came along then you can close peak membership at 3 members. If a number of charters came along then likewise no need to fill the member slots. The numbers specified are maximum numbers. I will close the boat share to new members when current members are starting to be adversely effected. People who were in on last years boat share got all the sailing they wanted at very little expense. However, all too often people ignore the real cost of sailing and pretend (as they do with car ownership) that it is cheaper than it really is. I don't expect to fill all the slots - I do want to find the right people.

You boat owners are all the same, one little mistake and I'm never allowed to forget it!! Edward is just the same. Must be something to do with the Swedish influence. I guess it's all part of the learning process!!!
