Is there anything good about a dog on a boat?

I've sailed on 2 yachts which had dogs aboard and they took up a much of the cockpit floor as both owners deemed this to be the safest and most comfortable place for the dogs.. I have size 12 feet and on lumpy seas when tacking or faffing about with sheets etc I always seemed to stand on the dogs. Resultant squealings from the owners were worse than the noise from the dogs. I'd rather be safe than sail with a fat, heavy, we,t smelly, farting, useless animal that got under my feet at critical times..... Now, about the dogs!!

the good thing about labradors is that they are excellent at enduring whatever you throw at them - very accepting

it is the transfer from boat to dinghy and back that is a challenge

when I write it up I shall try to mention how marvelous it is going ashore twice a day wherever you are whether you want to or not.

Maggie is at least better than the golden retriever Jill and I shared the eboat with for two weeks in the hebs

I don't think he was dry for the whole 14 days

we have a 5 stone old dalmation that proves a challenge. Also hairy. Adds loads to any activity though. now got a smaller (non shedding) hound as well

I love all dogs, but they do come in lots of shapes and sizes, and some suit for different lifestyles. A slightly small dog for those struggling to lift 26kgs+ in and out of boats may be worth test driving next time round...! Also a dog with a coat that does not moult so much is great for boats...

Our Scotty loves the boating life, not quite so keen on the journey but really enjoys being with us on the boat. I do so agree with everyone else, a dog does get you out of the boat and walking, yes I know without a dog you can walk, but a dog gives you that necessity that being honest, I do need.
