Is there an easy way to learn the colregs

Seamans Guide is a very good programmed learning book. But not a good 'quick reference' guide if you need an answer in a hurry. But in a hurry I would take Powerskipper's approach:

Write your own colregs!

I see--it's not requisite, but it may be desirable.

For the record, the state of Maryland requires all boaters pass a written exam before they can command a vessel of any sort. Questions are part Colregs/MD regs, part health & safety.

Doesn't seem to stop the crazies and their cigarette boats, though.

1. If YOU SHOW them RED - YOU'VE got right of way
2. If YOU SHOW them GREEN - THEY'VE got right of way
3. Keep out of way of the professionals: Navy, Merchant & fishermen
4. BIG boat has right of way
5. YOU have got to do everything possible to avoid a collision
6. Everything else is b*ll*cks

When I took my YM Theory I used flash cards combined with a drinking friend and couple of pints in the pub. My job was to treach him about Col Regs, even though he had never sailed. So it needed some background explaination for him to understand my questions.

It is surprising how much quicker you remember when you reverse the role from being a learner to a teacher.

If upon your port is seen a boats light of green
There's now't for you to do
since green to port keeps clear of you

If to to starboard red appears it is your duty to keep clear

if ahead both green and red
turn to starboard and show YOUR red

With regard to lights
All vessels underway will show red, green white.
Extra lights as follows
Power vessel white masthead.
Power vessel over 50m forward a low white in addition to white masthead.

Red over White Frying tonight (Fishing Vessel)
Green over white Grappling (A trawler)
White over red.Pilot in bed.

Boat on the right has the right(POWER)
There are probaly lots more memory aids so watch for updates on the forum.
