In my 8ft GRP tender, I have to keep my weight on the amidships thought and lean back to turn the tiller on the outboard with my finger tips. This is a bit precarious, but the bigger problem is that I can't operate the throttle lever.

I would prefer an outboard with twist grip throttle and a tiller extension so I am more in control. I would prefer to a 2 stroke to keep the weight down, too.

Any suggestions?

Older ones: Tomos 4hp, Yamaha Malta 3hp, Evinrude/Johnson 4hp or Yamaha 3.5hp. Or new four stroke : Honda 2.3hp.

The small chinese ones on ebay are two stroke, evading EC rules somehow, and have twist grip - but quality variable, and spares could be a problem.

Those Maltas were damn good engines.
+1
But on 19' boat they have range enough to motor you from Lymington to Yarmouth and back out again 1/2 way along the pier on the way out (don't ask how I know, its not like I made the same mistake twice :o).

I have a Tomatsu now and I use an oar blade, resting it on the kill cord stop and twist the blade to move the throttle works well once you have got the hang of it...
