is there a college for trainee marine engineers?

Is there a formal trainee scheme or college for wannabe marine engineers anywhere on the Thames?

I don't know of one in the south of England. But if you are willing to go furher afield I'd recommend South Shields Marine and Technical College. It's a long time (a very long time!) since I went there but the standard of instruction was very good and cheap lodgings were available nearby.

You could also contact the British Shipping Federation for advice.

My son did his marine engineering apprenticeship, some years ago now, at Paragon in Poole. It's very highly regarded in the trade and my son did well out of it. It's where Sunseeker send their apprentices.

Not sure on the Thames...but UKSA on the IoW does both the RYA Diesel Course (suitable for small marine engines maintenance) and also the MCA Approved Engine Course (suitable for engineers on Coded craft over 24m LOA and under 500mt). Anything bigger then would need one of the big marine colleages such as South Shields, Warsash, Plymouth, etc etc

if looking to gain some hands on experience then your local Maritime Volunteer (MVS.org.uk) Unit (shameless plug sorry) is always on look out for volunteers, both inexperienced and trained!

I did my AEC at UKSA. Good course and facilities but not very long and only really a foundation for further training.

Yes the AEC is designed for when you need more engineering knowledge then the Day long Diesel Course gives you but you don't need a fully fledged Ships Marine Engineer.....
