I havent found any posts from anyone in the Black sea.Is that becouse theres no internet connection?

10 years ago i heard on a tempory ssb net that there were lots of charter boats setting up there but i havent heard anything since about the Black sea?

Anyone been there? With Europe getting bigger it should be a safe and interesting place to sail (albeit a bit chilly)

I met this boat with 2 interesting anchors in the Adriatic (sorry, I do not know how to insert a picutre). She was a very sturdy steel boat from Odessa with an experienced owner. I asked him what the Black Sea was like. He said that there is nothing really interesting, no good harbours and relatively frequently bad weather. He said that he always takes a crew to sail accross from Odessa to Istanbul (and back in the autumn) as quickly as possible and the vacation starts there. It seemed like he knew what he was talking about.

There was an article few years ago in YM or similar about sailing in the Black Sea. It did not look particularly attractive as far as I remember.

That sound like a good generalisation! When i sailed along the black sea coast i found it cold (water) !!Hot sun,& rain but not much?? more than the med in summer but i loved the small fishing ports! The amazing wood yards boat yard and fish!
Storms? Not more than the med less perhaps! but mostly a good wind better than the med,Istanbul was amazing! I stopped there!

The sea was black! and cold! butthe air walm! somehow my memories of my cruise want me to go back given the over crowding and over priceing of the med and everywhere else ??

Thats why i wonder if there arnt a few there??

We dont hear a thing from the west coast either(of Turkey)??

Will i have to find a less compact boat to beable to take supplies with? There was almost no wine nor bier!!!!

Along the North coast the Crimea's an absolutely fascinating area (try reading Neal Ascherson's book "The Black Sea" and you'll see why). Not so interesting from a navigational point of view, though a visit for example to Balaklava where there is a small yacht club and a very interesting harbour (complete with James Bond style submarine base buried in the mountains) would be good, but from the cultural and scenery point of view it's great.

Sevastopol and Yalta, also in the Crimea, are fascinating places. There's at least one marina in Sevastopol, though it's pretty basic, or was when I popped in (on foot) 3 years ago. But things can change quickly.

Sochi is a resort I'd love to visit but haven't had time.

It's also possible to visit some Ukrainian cities like Nikolayev and Kherson by proceeding into the Limans and up the River Dnepr.

I guess places like Georgia to the East would also be fascinating (I've been to Tbilisi, which is great, but not to the coast).

The biggest pain visiting somewhere like Ukraine by sea will be the bureaucracy. I haven't checked, but (judging by Russia - and they tend to have similarish restrictions) you probably can't just anchor anywhere - you'll almost certainly have to fill in paperwork for each port you visit, as they won't be geared up for foreign yachts.

Sounds wonderful! I can see the rusting iron pontoons and commercial ports with piers ment for destroyers

Sadly communisum of the past means expensive today!

They want macdonalds pizzaland and mp3 now!I hope sailing accross the water will be possiable and the new EEC members not like the ones in the ex jougoslavia expensive thinking capatilists are to be flessed Bulgaria has a good radio station informative though these days less so!

Just now im looking for a new (used) boat that could take me up the Warta Wisla perhaps the Biebrza or the Nogat great food stunning intelegent woman! and not yet re- communist-ised!!!

MacDonalds are universal in Ukraine - Pizza Hut are also universal... but the quality especially of MacDonalds is noticeably better there than in the UK - for a variety of reasons - so it's no real hardship eating in them. Prices are very cheap if you earn pounds/Euros/dollars, espcially in the off season. Last time I was there stayed in a variety of hotels (some quite grand in their way) for between £2 and about £4 a night. OK, it was winter, and they were distinctly soviet in decor, but even so, not expensive by UK standards.

But that's not why you go somewhere like Crimea. Fascinating place, with fantastic people. Culturally very different from western Europe. In some ways more backward. But in other ways you'll discover wonderful things that have long been lost in western Europe. IMHO.

Its my hope to stay there as a "local" On the canals and later?my crusing buget can once again be within the £50 per week with ease! And without starvation nor hardship!(europe has markets that leave a lot over. do ex comunists have the same)?Sadöy they always had to take what they could.

What a wonderful window of oppertunity! In a year or two im sure Bulgaria wont be the same .Its realy corrupt beyond EEC imagination?? (corruption amongst that lotEEC elected umm by accident)Prices will become sky high

Now if i travell through Poland can the Woman speak Russian? Yes!!They prefer to speak English(and do incradably well unlike the men!)But they do have other useful languages are intelegent(thats not so good)and are stunning !!!umm What should i do??

Polish woman are difficult! The problem is their intelegence and their learning how can you not want to help them rather than explore? The ones over a "certain age" can only speak Polish(and some English!)
Damm!! why are Polish woman so inteliget understanding and stunning!(even over 40s!!)Wont get anywhere they will prefer to stay on land and be persuasive!!

what am i saying??? Its the drink!! and winter

About Polish women - as SWMBO is a wonderful example of the species I can only agree! Intelligent, beautiful, talented and great to be with.

I actually find it surprising how few Poles speak Russian - and most of those who do, maybe 10%, do not want to. I can't remember meeting one who speaks it well. Just a few, very few, are beginning to think it might be useful and beginning to learn it. But the quickest way to get yourself hated is by using Russian words, or suggesting that Polish is at all similar to Russian (it is). Lucky SWMBO won't see this, or I'm in the poo /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Black sea : an unspoilt Gem

Europes best kept seceret and long may it last. Lots of interests from birdlife, british built castles, fortresses, catacombes, cities and the people are great etc etc. Usually only see about couple of yachts a month in Odesa area although Yalta etc is more popular. Money goes a very long way if you know the ropes but obvious western fools and their money are soon parted.
Great weather from April through to Sept.

No visas required Ukraine cruising is great, you just have use your noodle and book in over the VH with the coastguards.

But I suggest to keep away and leave us to enjoy this in splendid isolation.(we have a flat overlooking the beach and dacha in the coastal region and will sail Ronhilda around to there when I retire.)

Re: Black sea : an unspoilt Gem

I see! Youve all got in at the start.I looked at Bulgaria but not speaking the language and not knowing the corrupt comunist ways of admin its hard going!!

In Poland perhaps becouse many woman wanted to speak English to practice or improve and were takeing English classes, and doing very well indeed! Many said they spoke Russian!!!But as you say they added they dident like Russian and never used it!!
I suspect being intelegent and working hard as only woman can they learnt it becouse they couldent help learning!

Where can i buy a Dacha??And a mooring in a port??Sounds great

Re: Black sea : an unspoilt Gem

It dose sound wonderful, when i was crusing the Turkish cost i wanted to stay,it was a wonderful experance and haveing the boat to liveaboard was perfect though from time to time i was offerd a place to stay and in Samsun i checked into a hotel which was just so inexpensive while i cleaned my bilge and did the painting.

A fool and his money, now that realy is the problem and why Italy is unafordable even for Italians that live there!!By now my once good income is far less so therefore even if i were to be foolish theres not much to be parted from!!!

Do you mean you have your place in the Ukrain?Or Bulgaria? In winter the tem can fall to zero degrees and it can snow?? is that the same in Ukrain?

Are there many "europeans" sailing there??

Re: Black sea : an unspoilt Gem

Greetings trouville - Is Romania an option worth considering as a Black Sea base? I've worked there many times, though was based inland, and have no sailing experience in the country. You can get by very well with English and French. With many W enterprises now operating in Romania the infra-structure is 'on the move' albeit from a near basketcase position. Found the people very pleasant, hospitable and kind and even in areas of poverty never had a moment of unease. Have a yen to visit my many friends in the country by sea so would be interested to hear from you, or anyone, with sailing experience in Romania.

Re: Black sea : an unspoilt Gem

Err well i dident realise it was on sea?So far ive only sailed along the Turkish coast as then there was the cold war!and Bulgaria refused my visa!! A transit yes but stay no!
I havent got as far as to look at all the contries on the Black sea it seems!!I had only Bulgaria and arminia in mind!

Well sounds interesting i may well have to expoler there in 2008 before it becomes prohibitivly expensive with the european tax money flowing and the ultr corrupt MEPs we have

Tell me more about the romainian coast! And Rumania im sure its change from what i heard about it when a Belgium artist went there she was less than impressed!!

Dacha's tricky as last time (quite a while ago admittedly) I looked, foreigners weren't allowed to in Ukraine. So you have to be creative...

Bulgaria property market is very popular for foreigners at the moment, so I understand (and judging by the posters on the London Underground encouraging you to buy Bulgarian property...)

Re: Black sea : an unspoilt Gem

Bad sign! The Check republic was being sold off at check stations a few years ago oh well! Ill look for a port with a mooring i can have inperpertuity and live aboard id much prefer that!Yes i wouldent have a problem with finding my way??I rather thought of Arminia

I may well go have a look in the new year. Why in France do so many cafe and boats offer a drink weekends??My sons comeing down tomorrow and i havent bought salad or potatoes!!( he called today after lunch) So black spaggetti with roast fish and shrimp sauce then roast beef and yorkshire pudding with brussle spouts then tirammisu comte cheese with biscuits?

My daughter comes down on monday! And i havent cleeaned their boat!!Pwww

Guess you can't have western standards with the lowest costs or thereabouts in Europe! Take you pick!

Don't know much about the coastline - yet. Romania has only 225km of coastline. Main ports are for cargoe and I know of no marinas. Biggest are at Constanta and nearby Midia with several others, notably Tulcea and Galati, in what sounds like an area with cruising potential in the Danube delta. The Danube itself is navigable by seagoing vessels for around 150km. If you're looking for an off the beat, cost effective base and are prepared to rough it a bit and 'go with the flow' maybe Romania's worth further research. Cheers.
