At the risk of sounding more nerdy than I am already the problem with w-vs is that they are not predictive in the same that a good helm is. You predict that you need to react as a wave rises underneath you and act accordingly. The racing autopilots have movement sensors to pick up the lift and act more like a good helm. Windvanes merely keep you at the same angle to the wind even if that means smashing through the waves that a good helm would steer around, losing speed with the hit.
I'm also not sure whether a w-v could react quckly enough to a boat surfing at 20 knots+. Perhaps there are other out there that might know?
