Is it still possible to find an economic south coast mooring?

By economic I mean <£1k. And south coast excludes Falmouth and west of there.

If my current boat transaction goes through, then its a bilge keeler of 30ft or so.

Ideas - by pm if you wish

Langstone? But I wouldn't leave it on the mooring over winter if I were you.

Yes.

Up theTamar or lower Lynher. And you get all of Plymouth Sound to play in when weather in open water seems just a touch over boisterous. Numerous club moorings and a few private syndicate drying ones. Some waiting lists particularly nearer open sea etc. I favour moorings above the Bridge over Tamar as both cheaper and more winter secure, but I dont day sail

Probably up the Yealm too though their formula is complex

Quay Lane Boatyard in Portsmouth Harbour would be worth a look. Drying moorings in soft mud. Gosport Boatyard are dearer, but have the benefit of a water taxi. Also Wicor Marine. Lots of clubs have cheap moorings, but it's dead men's shoes, so join a club to enjoy the facilities, not to get a mooring.

As the OP is in S Wales the quickest to get to is probably M5 to Topsham (about £320) on the Exe, or or a bit on to Starcross/Powderham (about £350) on the Exe.

Plymouth not bad as still M5. Weymouth and Poole have horrible transport links so takes way longer to get there from Bristol than to go to Cornwall and are expensive possibly except for some drying moorings by Sandbanks: Langstone nearly as far as Plymouth but with worse links: Hamble Solent are further than Exeter with indifferent transport links and higher prices.

I don’t know if it’s improved but I recall at at the Folly on the permanent moorings closest to the Folly side that it really was only deep enough for a bilge keeper as that’s where we kept the Centaur. The outer side of the pontoon was deeper. If you are looking boats on the medina are often sold with moorings -don’t know if that still happens though. Clearly not the easiest drive though if travelling from Wales but I suspect anywhere on mainland might be more convenient (maybe you have a motorbike though) but worth comparing prices of Chris at Gosport boatyard with Wicor (long way up creek though) and those of Medina and on Exe but I guess it depends where and how you want to sail from berth . You might also look at Bembridge harbour if the island attracts.

I can't imagine keeping a boat on the IoW if I lived in Wales. The cost of ferries to get there would surely outweigh any savings, not mention the hassle. Heck, I live in Southampton, and I'm not sure I'd take a free mooring there!

I don't know that area, but if there's nothing suitable in the Bristol Channel, I'd be thinking about Devon or E Cornwall too. I assume that Gower or Pembroke have already been eliminated.

Wicor is an excellent place and further up, Fareham etc is a possibility. If you don't mind being on the mud up a creek most of the time I'm sure there are "economic" moorings around.

Well might mention river Teign , mooring apply to Harbour Master ; but for a sailing craft its really just a Harbour as the Bridge restricts masts going above it ; Paignton Harbour is drying but has direct access to Tor Bay and the open sea , parking I have found to be an issue , Treluggan Boat yard at Landrake dries out , but I understand has a pontoon mooring , car parking is I understand not an issue ; Weir Quay on the Tamar , a real Old Fashioned (but the best type) Yard , family owned /run ; inland but easy access to the Sea , really beautiful scenery along the mikes of inland river , easy parking ;

Suggest that one finds out about the Car parking arrangements , time restrictions etc plus charges ; unfortunately here of the Teign even the Council Polly Steps launching place has not favourable restrictions in place

Best of luck with your searches cp

Environment Agency fore and aft trot mooring on the R Frome (back end of Poole Harbour), and pay a fee to Ridge Wharf boatyard to keep, launch dinghy, park and use their facilities (toilets and showers).
I've been there for 20+ years now, stay in all year, boat is well protected from wind by the river banks.

Sailed the Bristol channel for 30 years. Had my last boat on a summer mooring in Falmouth, which is a great place but a miserable drive. Kept her before in Plymouth ( Weir Quay?) and that was a feasible drive but poor parking. TBH just thinking of summer - in winter I will take her home to the BC so I can do jobs on her.

A number of clubs in Plymouth would have moorings under your target price but you normally have to front up and join first and people are wary of giving guarantees. My pick would be a trot mooring on the River Plym, administered by the Plym YC. They are on the right side of town, deep, protected and the journey is as easy as it gets as long as the A38 is moving freely. There is good local on and off street parking, excellent all tide access to the Sound and a comfortable club house.
In your shoes I might look at the swinging moorings mentioned, in Dartmouth but access and parking is generally the big problem around there.
