Is it really necessary

In my experience, winter is when covers go green and manky, because they stay wet. I have a nice shiny new one, so I think I'm going to take it off and, possibly, replace it with a bit of plastic tarp, well tied down to keep the water off the hatch and potential leaks.

To keep birds off during the winter, get some garden netting and put it over the cover's frame, but make sure it's bird proof - no matter how much we hate the shite hawks, we wouldn't want one trapped inside to starve. An alternative would be to make up a cat's cradle of thin black cord.
