With some auto diesel oil change recommendations now at 20000 miles and all the improvements of modern lubricants is it really necessary to oil change at 100 hrs.
100 hrs would be around 6000mls in a car oil isnt expensive its your engine your call.
i do mine once a season approx 100 hrs the oil cost less than £8
This is a function of engine design more than oil development.
In many marine engines which do not have common rail injection the fuel pumps are mounted on the crankcase and so spill leakage from the pump plungers goes to the crankcase. This dilutes the oil hence the need for frequent oil changes.
The Nanni and Beta engines come into this catagory as they meet emmision requirements without going to common rail etc.
Some older engines like the perkins have external fuel pumps so maybe these can enjoy longer periods so long as operating temperatures are maintained correctly.
I change mine every year regardless in my old 1.8 Thorneycroft. We don't do that many hours though. Mind you, I'm obsessive - I take a bath every year whether I need it or not!
Oil doesnt just lubricate, it washes carbon etc off the bores, but this turns the oil into grinding paste after around 8 - 10,000 miles and is why the used oil comes out of your engine so black. Modern low emission engines produce much less carbon, so can go longer before the oil becomes too contaminated, allowing longer oil change intervals. Stick to manufacturers recommendations.
Also, lightly used auxiliary eng8nes can build up enough internal condensation to cause corrosion problems. Regular oil changes help prevent this.
Car diesels not to be confused with agricultural machines we use - and in much harsher conditions - sloshing seawater round them for cooling, for instance! (turbo folks not quite in this category, of course!)
Hours is not really the factor - leaving the engine for periods without use is more important to longevity - so remove old oil prior to winter layup, whatever the hours. Turf out the old filter too of course. A small price for the benefits.
My Yanmar 4JH4's are now 50 hours, 250, 500 and 1000 as per the book. I will probably stick with 200 hours each oil change just for my own peace of mind.
you need to stick to the 100 hours, have you noticed what happens to these modern cars on supposed 20000 mile service intervals?? most of them have serious mechanical problems at an early age. My 02 plate Laguna has had 3 turbo's in 120000 miles. my car is not alone i hear lots of horror stories from various garages. no oil yet invented can last so long on such a harsh environment.
