Is it possible to repair a punctured fender?

Sometimes a small leak can be sealed by applying a hot iron to the fender and dragging some molten plastic across the hole, but it won't then have its original resilience and may burst if heavily loaded. Won't that be fun! If the repair works, then best to relegate it to use on the dinghy. If it dosen't, then cut it up as a tool caddy or use the two halves as winch covers, maybe.

If it is made of a vinyl compound you can repair cuts up to an inch or so with vinyl cement. I have done several Polyform, Taylor,Scandvik?,etc with perfect results.
Over here,I use the vinyl cement sold for swimming & kiddies pool repair.
The object is to "weld" the edges of the cut together chemically with the glue as it slightly dissolves the vinyl.
Remove all air possible. Clean the edges with acetone, laquer thinner(fingernail polish remover) or methyl hydrate(wood alky).
Use a screwdriver, etc to open pinholes to a workable size-6mm+. Apply cement to edges of hole liberally making sure you get some inside.Position fender so that edges of hole come together. Let set for at least 2hrs-overnight is best.
You may put a clear vinyl patch over hole if you wish, but not necessary if edges weld properly.

My personal experience. Good 8" x 24" fenders are $50+ here,so worth it to me.

You clearly need a mushroom shaped patch attached to a threaded stem which can be pushed through the hole and then pulled back. Another patch with a deep recess for a nut is then put on from the outside; a nut done up (into the recess) ,,,,,and finally a plug glued into the recess to prevent any possibility of scuffing.

Now how much shall I charge for such a device? ..... a lot more than a new fender costs:D
