Is it necessary/do you have a fire extinguisher in your diesel engine compartment.

We don't but we are thinking of fitting one. I know its an insurance requirement on an inboard petrol engine but was wondering if any insurers out there insist on it for a diesel engine. I had one on my last boat but see few today fitted on modern boats.

We have a 6KG Powder Manual mounted in the stern Laz, In the past an auto Fireboy inside the engine bay would be my first choice.

Depends on the size of your boat. It is good to have one ready for immediate use incase, manual or automatic. I think the later is more important as they tend to go off when the sensor reacts to the heat.

After having an alternator go up in flames (Luckily we were on board and had an extinguisher near the engine lid so it could be dealt with quickly, and we only lost the alternator and a bit of wiring!) we fitted an automatic 3kg dry powder above the engine. If we hadn't been on board we'd have lost the boat, it may bugger the engine for a while but it will put out the fire and that's what it's there for. I'm sure my insurance Co would rather pay for a new engine than a total loss due to fire.

Still it's your call.
