If your club put this in their newsletter what would your reaction be....

"I have been asked to mention that it is a general club etiquette that fenders are pulled inboard when vessels are under way, and that it would be appreciated by the committee if efforts could be made in this respect. Thank you."

I'd tell them to naff off!

My fenders only come in for sail pasts or tidal outings and its an effort to get the crew to do it even then!

Hmmm....

This is all very well, but given the sometimes short distances between locks, not practicable, nor conducive to relaxed boating on the quiet upper reaches!

Fine for tidal or long stretches, but not lock-hopping.

Incidentally, also a health hazard on a Broom 30, as the risk of falling in while undoing them, or dropping a part overboard, or even tripping over parked fenders ain't worth the hassle!

It's general club etiquette not to stand naked on the bow but no need to stick it in the newsletter! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That will be TMYC, perhaps their seamanship skills are naff and they cant tie them on properly...

What a load of old horse......

They are boats on the Thames for crying out load you need fenders as your are constantly mooring up. Keep them clean and tidy if you wish, take pride in your own boat but there is no need to have it written in a rule book.

sorry that' the funniest thing I have read all day, in fact if the truth be told I like the fact that the boat I use on the Thames is green, covered in scratches, millions of fenders (dragging in the water) and overflowing with beer bottles.

I like it even more when folk look down on me in the lock and assume that I have not got I clue what I am doing or any knowledge of boating / sailing.

sorry I am on a roll now...but some things really are more important in life.

Thats kind of what I did, i know you will find it hard to believe of someone as mild mannered as me... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I do prefer to see a boat without the fenders dangling over the sides and when I have crew they are kept busy taking them in after each lock. I was given a photo taken of Lazy Days great detail, great background and one fender not yet taken in, it spoilt the whole thing now with image editing I was able to take the offending fender out and now have a great picture somewhere?????

The late Ken Humphreys had a wonderfull roping system for the fenders on Tantalus, he'd tried a rope on the port and starboard sides through the bottom eyes of each fender with a knot at each, one end tied to the bow end fender the other in the cockpit. Ken would pull on the rope till the fender were at deck level then give it a flick and the fender would jump onboard, I did try it on Lazy days but could not get it to work as well as Ken did.

Agreed they do look better but to be reminded in a news letter is a bit like a note from the headmaster.....

In fact I have just thought of a useful addition to the boat, I am heading out at lunch to get my self a good old skull n crossbow flag to fly alongside the forum flag. While I am there I may pick myself up a union jack to fly from the stern.

I seem to remember as a kid in the 70's doing this religiously and it was only hire boats or inexperienced types that didn't bother, nothing to do with Yacht clubs just that peeps were just proud of the appearance of their boats.

However it is bloody faff and on some modern boats with no sidedecks completely impractical, but I do try and hang them all at the same height, not dragging in the water etc... there is a right way to hang them, some of the fenders you see hanging over the bows for instance, whats the point?

Don't forget a few nice big and garish balloons Richard !

Oh, and leave a couple of ropes trailing over the side and a few 'smalls' hanging out to dry would be good /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am thinking of yet another campaign......"POO" ....Pompous Oafs Out !

My main issue with it I guess is that I am very anti removing what little protection I have outside the boat to satisfy a pompous out of date sense of “tradition”.

Unfortunately the other folks we all pass on the river are not “gentlemen” wearing boaters and blazers any more are they?

They are called Kevin and Gary and dont give a toss if they run into your boat.

You may have noticed that, not only did I participate in the sail past at the TVR (remarkable in itself!) but I di, in fact lift the fenders on that occasion.

As for your club newsletter, I think a response from 'Pissed of of Penge' should be in order - I could pen one for you if you like.......

I have sent you an application form for my club for peeps who dont want to belong to a club /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
