Is it just me these things happen too?

I was giving the boat a bit of a wash down today and jumped onto the pontoon. When I say onto it was more into. The wooden board broke, my leg went through and I now have a gashed, swollen and very painful leg.

I hobbled to the harbour master with the broken pieces of pontoon in hand. To be fair he looked at my leg and asked if I wanted him to get a doctor. He then went and put another piece of pontoon in the gap I made.

Do these things just happen to me and should I take the matter further?

By the way we are in France.

Sounds painful; my commiserations. Have you had it looked at by a doc? A gash from a mouldy, rotten (I am assuming) piece of wood could turn nasty.

As to what you should do - I'd at least tell the marina to inform their insurers, just in case you become incapacitated as a result of the accident and need to claim against them. In the UK you'd no doubt already have been bombarded by ambulance chasing lawyers.

Hope it all mends soon; I haven't done what you did, but did get a nasty scrape from a metal rubbing strip on a pontoon once, which took forever to mend and was quite painful. Unfortunately I'm a fool and didn't sue the owner of the pontoon

It is very painful but no one does these things on purpose. There is too much sueing going on because people think they can make a quick buck but then again it could have been my wife or kids. Strangley enough there are several planks on the pontoon that have been changed so they must know it is starting to rot.
Besides the pain I just find it funny i jumped off and found myslf stuck through the pontoon unable to get out. Do these things only happen to me?

The point is I jumped in not on. Just getting off the boat. I presume you have got a little car with boarding steps similar to an air craft that comes alongside your boat.
Come on, show some sympathy and at least offer to cook me chicken soup which is the answer to all pain.

Similar thing happened to us in a "port de plaisance" on the Seine just north of Paris. It wasn't me but a helpful co-plaisancier that suffered. The marina staff reacted with a typical Gallic shrug of the shoulders and life continued ... ...

Not me - I just have side decks that aren't significantly higher than the pontoon

I'm sorry you've hurt your leg. I hope it's soon better. What was that you were saying on another thread about French H & S?

Yes, it only happens to you of course! But if you weren't out there chancing your leg, there'd be no story!

BTW if plank teak then wood splinters more poisonness than normal.

Thank you tudor, It is still a little swollen so I may well visit one of those crazy doctors today but I heard they were all out sailing

That happened to an AZAB competitor after they came back to Falmouth. Their journey had lasted a lot longer than it should have, thanks to a lack of wind, reduced rations for the last couple of days, he stepped off the boat and went through the marina. Climbed out, tied up the boat, they arrived on a Friday and he spend most of the next two days drinking. Monday came and his leg was still sore, so he went to the doctors.

He'd broken his Leg

I saw him in the Marina office having a conversation. It went along the lines of:
Him "out of interest how much is this Marina worth?"
Them "I'm not sure, sir"
Him "can I have the details of your insurers then please?"
Them " why?"
Him "I fell through your marina and did this (pointing at the thigh length cast on his leg)"
Them "oh, we can put you in contact with some local solicitors if you would like"
Him "Thank you, but I'm a director of X (a big petrochemicals company), I have 14 lawyers on my floor, I'm sure I can find one of them with a bit of spare time!"

French doctors are so afraid of being sued, the only thing they do nowadays is say "Zut alors" and then refer you to a variety of specialists. I think it's called spreading le risque.

When I was about 25 I was folding a sail that had been laid over the pontoon and finger.As I stepped on it I went through the triangulation where the finger hinges are.There was a sharp bit of metal and it neatly sliced a 30cm long bit of skin off my shin.It was sore for six months.

Last time I did something like that I treated it as a good excuse to test the radio with a call to the marina office!
