Is it just me or are all modern boats completely horrible ?

Would not suit me - I like a lot more accomodation for my money! You do have to remember that the First range are built as racing boats and comfort/accomodation take second place....
 
I do wonder if we have reached peak "wide arse".

Some of the delta shapes from the Italian designers are beginning to look like mobos with masts
 
Inside looks like a new studio apartment before anyone's moved in. Or some new student accommodation. Traditional it isn't but assume it works well enough as a fast cruiser/racer...

I do not subscribe to the idea that the last proper boats were designed in the seventies.
Having just visited Boot Dusseldorf I find today’s new boats a lot more interesting and appealing than those of say 15 years ago. Much more variety and niches too. If you have the means, you can find something to suit you.

The yacht that you are referring to has been built by a mainstream builder & they know the market. hence their success. Those that buy it buyit for a reason. It might not be looks. It might be price. Interior might not be the No. 1 priority. Who knows.
Personally I tend to look at these yachts & say to myself " Well i cannot afford one" so I look away & get on with life. I leave it to those who can buy it to decide what they want.
 
I tend not to believe manufacturers build what people want ... I trend to the idea they build what they THINK and some spotty consultant says people want.

Over time we adjust to that look - then another consultant charges a mega fee to advise something else they say we want.

Market Research conducted to try and reach what people want is suspect - because like any poll you have to choose carefully .. or choose specifically to get the result desired.

Dream on.... Beneteau didn't build a €1.3 billion turnover business by listening to "some spotty consultant".
 
One of the things about proper coachroofs was it raised the hand rails up to grab height gave a place to wedge your foot acted as a breakwater and offered a sitting place outside the cockpit to sit and read a book or do some splicing,that tennis court must look pretty scary on a dark night in a gale,still nice lot of teak to maintain!...........each to their own!

Think you forget the years that Bendy and Jeanneau propped each other up .... signed contracts for Eastern Europe construction ..... cornered the Charter market ... look at Sunsail and the like.

But I said TEND to think ... we see it in cars ... boats ... all sorts ... designers and consultants devising new shapes and concepts. Eeking out onto the market and we get used to it.

What has that got to do with a discussion on the design of modern boats? Beneteau has built a successful business through research and innovation. They now employ 8200 people in France, US, Poland, Italy and China.
