Is it ethical?

Re Cobras earlier post. would owners on a swinging mooring be just a miffed if I popped a laminated card on board as I was passing?

Get a van - have your advertising message signwritten on it in large letters with your contact info.
Park it in the marina car park near the entrance.

Next weekend - park at next marina

Happens all the time in Gosport

Job done!

As someone who used to work as a berthing master in a marina, I can tell you it's not the case that we only wanted approved contractors, but because the staff in the office used to receive of all the complaints about the leaflets, most of which have been raised above! :-)

We also liked to make sure that anyone who advertised in the marina (for free, on a noticeboard) had suitable insurance before they commenced work. It might be worth approaching marina offices to see if you can leave some leaflets with them, or put up an advert? Most of our local services found this was the most efficient way of advertising!

Good luck with the business - hope it goes well!

I had a little discussion recently with the management of the marina where I am berthed regarding the "approved contractors" clause in my berthing agreement. Outcome was they had no objection to any contractor working on berthholders boats provided they had the correct insurance and the proper equipment to carry out the work in accordance with HSE rules and regulations. The clause is/was there to prevent cowboy operators coming in and causing damage to other boats.

Strange that there was no clause about DIY repairs or maintenance though.

As for flyers stuck below the wipers - I don't even read such things, in fact they would put me off using any services advertised in such a manner. There are plenty of services advertised in the local swindlery and in the marina office.

What about an "A5" size flyer with your sales pitch on one side and say a set of tide tables, or some other usefull data, on the other and all nicely laminated. Drop one of those in the cockpit and they would be less likely to be binned.

So how long does it take to unbelt, open your door and remove the offending object? Are we talking cars here?

I have just read all the posts on this thread. I can't believe so many people object to a small businessman trying to drum up some new business in such an inoffensive way. Invading the privacy of a home, with a telephone call at dinner time (or any other time) is one thing, but flyers on windscreens for a service boat owners might well be interested in..........come on everyone.....STOP BEING SO POMPOUS!

If you are looking for business in Lymington Andy, send me a PM.
