Last year i posted the same problem, I had run out of diesel got the engin going ran out again then a third time but then there was no diesel left at all.Tied up i blead the system (filled the tank)and started the engin.

Since then ive had a blacksmith banging his hammer on his anvil. Before that he makes it hard to start.I have to heat for 30 seconds press the diesel squert then start, mayby!!mostly another 30 second heat then quick start spayed in the air intake and with luck its starts??The blacksmith then hammers away for the best part of 60 seconds.

The glow plugs work becouse when i heat after spaying the quick start theres an explosion!

Once going she ok providing i use the engine every few days, that is the engine will start eventually without quick start spray but the blacksmiths their hammering.

Before running out this Ford 3 cylinder engin from 1960 was faltless!20 seconds to heat the glow plugs then start lots of smoke as she walmed up then very little always sounded sweet and smooth.Always started first time, errrr errrr errr errr whoomm brum brum brum!

Ive pumped with the fule lift pump had someone pumping while i bled blead while the engines running bled while running fast and slow bled again without engine running. But always the blacksmiths there.

Do i need a new injection pump??I dont want to change the engine cos its better than the new ones!!Apart from the blacksmith??

What can i do? Put my fingers in my ears?Turn up my MP3 player???

HELP!

Duff injector will make a loud knocking sound...wouldnt use heat and ether together, either one or the other but not both together.

Yes!!I even had two undone or one fully undone then loosen the second and tighten the first then undo the second the second to third just in case i traped air.
Ive even undone all three then tightend before the engine stopped.

Blacksmith was back the next morning though!

Perhaps i should try adding Doxycycline as thats said to stop malaeria colera typhoid indidgestion?? Or buphane?? which stops any swelling inflamation bubonic palauge and distemper?

The phamasutical companies seem to have medicins for every thing includeing thing that might happen??Why not for my engin?? Asprine??

New engine??

I know!! If i put and outboard on the back and start to loosen the main engine barreres perhaps the though of being put overboard will frighten the blacksmith enough to leave????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Getting desperate! I have asked mechanics around this and other ports that i know and they all tell me to blead manualy but even for them it dosent work??

I had something very similar happen to my Mercedes OM636. After a long period of motoring at very low revs it started banging like yours. I switched it off immediately, thinking that something serious was about to occur. After much checking I couldn't discover anything wrong. When I delved into the owners handbook it suggested that it might be due to a sticking injector and that the way to sort it was to run the engine and rev it between tickover and maximum about 20 times in quick succession. Luckily, this cured the problem and it hasn't returned since. Give it a try if you are feeling brave.

Henry

It could be timing as well. After having our injectors done on strbd engine she smoked worse. Found out it were ten degrees out. It's also much harder to start. It can seem like a fuel issue but if you've bled and bled, checked filters and had the injectors done then timing is a probably culprit.

I wouldn't worry about the anvil chorus too much - my Yanmars do it all the time and have done from new.

I would however avoid use of ether sprays as they are bad for the engine. They wash oil off the cylinder walls and accelerate wear.

Duff injector - may have had some muck forced in when the last dregs were going through. The timing will not have shifted unless you took the injector pump off.

Injectors can make the most amazing noises when the spray pattern is wrong and the fuel detonates rather than burns.

And dont use ether and the heater. In fact dont use ether except in a real emergency - it preignites and knocks the living daylights out of your pistons and bearings, and can actually blow a hole through the piston. Heating it will make it pre-ignite even more quickly and increases the risk of engine damage.

Yes!I dont like the either, it dose start but makes an increadable noise which dose not sound as if the engines happy!I wont use it again then! It did sound as if it could damage something, when i sprayed and it dident start i heated again within 10 seconds there was a terific explosion!!(from inside the engin)

The reason im posting is becose it never made the hammer on anvil sound befor running out and it always used to start easly,

I havent done anything except blead from tank to injectors entering the head.Im just sure theres air in the injector pump. Once its running it seems to quiten down? But im sure even thats getting worse??Ill try in the morning but she dosent seem to have the same power and wont rev as she used to and isent as fast as she used to be.When i push the throtle open she dosent pick up as quickly either??

There is a fule retern and there is fule reterning. There wasent any dirt or water?? the tanks only 10 gallons and i have a water seperator and filter

That check lists great!!!

I dont like the sound of this too much . When (if) you get her running next time, take the oil filler cap off. If you get a whoosh of gas coming out, then the ether explosion may have damaged the engine - hence the knocking sounds.

OTOH Injector knock can sound appallingly loud, and a sticking injector can make the engine sound as if it is falling apart. While the knock is present, try undoing each injector pipe in turn. If the knock reduces or disappears while the fuel pipe is loosened then thats the injector causing the problem.

I had this problem in 1989 with the 6 cylinder engine of my VW LT 45 van - it turned out to be a broken return spring within the injector body, so the injector needle and shaft was just bouncing around.
