GM IV is more interesting than which JenBenBav Thirtyplus is the ideal starter boat.
More interesting still might be the occasional brief article on one of the many lovely old boats which have been restored to, or kept in, top class sailing condition
Mike
Totally agree all of that, YM has been crap for several months now, I think the project for GM was a great achievement but I do not want to keep hearing about it, they should have put a nice glass building over it which would have protected it for more years than it is likely to have now and allowed more people to see her, not just a selected few, I picked up Sailing Today and found that this was far better than YM, I am completley fed up with the pages opening on their own to the sail advert and also with the amount of advertising so come on YM, get your act together while you still have a reader base
Yep, I agree. Regrettably YM has slipped badly in the last year, while ST and, to a slightly lesser extent PBO, have improved.
FWIW, I too am sick to death of GM and they'd give us a break from it every month. Do a 'special' insert or something if they must, but leave it out of the regular mag.
I admire YM's efforts in getting GMIV back in the water, and continue to read and enjoy your coverage. But I do object to YM's website displaying at the top of its home page the nonsense that "Chichestster became the first to sail alone round the world." About fifteen others circumnavigated solo before Chichester, starting with Joshua Slocum in 1895-98. Chichester's accomplishments can stand by themselves without the false claim that he was first.
James, now you have GM sorted, can we start getting a proper ship out of her concrete dock & back on the water! Must be lottery money to refit and make shipshape the "CUTTY SARK" Then we 'd have a proper Tall Ship to be proud of!
I'm probably going to piss a few people off with this post but... what the hell /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif... it's been bugging me.
GMIV just isn't interesting IMO, we all know the history but the non stop barrage of "isn't it great", "look at us YM and UKSA... we are sailing GMIV", "We are now racing GMIV", "We allowed some lucky YM reader to lick the hull of GMIV... the honour!".... I'm sorry guys but ummm so what?!
It's now getting to be one over extended advert for the companies involved I mean the Three lovely ladies article last month. It just looked like a dare I say it?... Yes!... A mass Bukkake excerise for the "chosen" few media types/journos and was an incredibly tedious read.
My kids and I saw GMIV in the dry dock and my kids and I also viewed her at SIBS. My eldest (12) exclaimed "oh my god look at it!.... it's rubbish why did they do that, it should have been left alone and remembered as the legend it was" this caused all those on board to stare and look at us somewhat shocked (It's amazing how kids voices can be quite loud and travel great distances at times).
I asked wasn't she interested in looking at it to see how it was refurbished, lots of money involved, the splendour, the brave lads on the project etc. etc.
She replied "Why bother? what's the point? it's just for the old people the money could have gone on something else like sailing schools or helping others to get into sailing, it's a total waste" and with that she went to look at the lifeboat and the other yachts... you know what? I think she was onto something there.
Anyway, cheerio! [sound of door slamming and running into the distance before the GMIV lynch mob is fully assembled]
It is wll known that I am a Grumpy Old Git so it will come as no surprise when I say that I thought the whole re-furbishment thing was a total waste of money.
Chichester hated the boat, didn't he?
The only good thing about the whole publicity thing that surrounds it is the opportunity for, some kids to get, some Adventure Sailing.
I never dreamt that they would drag the story out this long. The whole thing seems more tedious than the Marina Boat Handling tomes that are normally used to fill out the mags.
Kinda bored and totally disinterested in the back slapping and isnt wonderful and all that balls that sprouts out of near as dam it every bloody yachty mag over the last few months.
Get over it, its a job well done, all be it at a price. Yes, lovely its sailing with little darlings, yes the its all great....
By definition GM cannot be any kind of dog to sail, nor can she be tippy tender whatever Chichester might have said, and what does he know anyway he never sailed armchairs did he?. GM is a proper wooden 'Classic' not a BenJenBav and therefore just has a few special 'characteristics' as one would expect.
Did someone tell me that Opal were looking at selling a lookalike? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Re: I can\'t see much wrong with covering it regularly
It's yachty and adventursome. I went to the press do during the rebuild and it was great to see the young lads learning the skills of boat building on her. I'd rather any boat was at sea than trapped in the concrete. It was also great to see the real passion that drove the team that have made it happen. Sure many among them have got hardnosed business objectives tied in with the romanticism but why not it was their money and effort. It didn't cost any of us a penny or an hour of our time.
So the tone of the coverage is all self congratulatory. So what. Are you supposed to take yer triumphs and hide em then. If the total price of freeing a boat back to sea, and getting some youngsters a bit of adventure, is a couple of pages of advertorial, I for one can put up with that quite happily.
I don't think Chichester described her as a dog but he did say she had "vices" and regarding tenderness he thought 40 degress heel was "excessive". Maybe he was expecting too much of the self-steering on a boat which he himself had specified needed to be fast. Maybe she needed more sea trials to get everything right before he went.
What I would like to see is an analysis of the design and sailing characteristics of the boat compared with what he described in the book. Plus I would love to know how he actually managed the boat in the conditions he experienced. For example, how on earth did a 65 year old man with a dodgy leg change a 600 sq ft genoa single-handed in a gale?
Proves a point - too much coverage. People are missing bits cause they just skip the articles.
I never said GMIV wass boring just that you are giving it too much coverage. It is certainly a worthwhile project abd she looked great out sailing but got over it and move on...
