Is Europe becoming off limits?

This cat was wrecked about a month ago and I have not seen any pics of it in the news. I have seen it and looked over it myself. Name Anneliese something of Rye. Was ketch rigged but dismasted in the wreck. Twin Kubota diesels. Im down that way next week and will have another look.
So every time a rubber dinghy gets "rescued" it makes the BBC, but a LARGE Cat that actually needed rescued doesn't make the news at all...

??

There was something about the catamaran in my Facebook feed a few weeks ago.

IIRC taken under tow by the Dover lifeboat after the crew had been taken off but the tow had to be cut in the port entrance after which she washed up onto the beach

I don't recall any mention of migrants etc

Dover RNLI's facebook page has some info on the rescue. One commenter asks what happened. One reply says:
Speaking to the owner the hull split and in the swell was opening front to back and filling with water quicker than the pumps could remove!!

Given the lack of mention of "migrants" or "theft", the fact that the crew were a man and a woman (not really the typical migrant profile in a 30' boat), and the above quote...I'm going to have to ask what makes you think the boat had been stolen by migrants?

There is one sailing boat that has been used by these migrants to cross the channel that I know of. Its a large catamaran that was wrecked on the beach near Folkestone and was then towed upside down to Dover. It has been up on the hard just in front of the yacht club next to the slipway ever sinse,or what is left of it is.I had a Cinnamon Island curry on Boxing day and it was still there then.
According to the local press, 'Anneliese' was being sailed from Rye with three people aboard - not migrants (there were rumours). Here is my picture taken just after it was dragged ashore in Dover.

Just for you xenophobes - below is a photo I took a while back of a British yacht being stolen by a migrant in Calais. Failure to observe normal port departure rules quickly brought him to official attention and he was brought back in, handcuffed to the binnacle, within the hour. So this can happen, but is very unusual.

I stand corrected. No migrants on the boat I saw. BTW I was not trying to make a point about how safe it is going to Calais one way or the other. The risk from P&O ferries is higher than getting the boat nicked.

The rising number of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel has been declared a "major incident" by the UK home secretary.

Sajid Javid has asked for an urgent call with his French counterpart about the situation.

It comes after at least 221 migrants attempted to cross the Channel to England in small boats since the beginning of November.

On Friday, 12 migrants were detained off the coast of Dover.

No doubt his French counterpart will be falling over him/herself to help the UK government out post-Brexit.

But not, apparently, a drone!
Mmm. Army asked to help at 15:50. Drone activity stopped definitely 6 hours later.
Then only a brief attempt the following day.

You sure they couldn't?

The press love things being declared major incidents. But the definition is rather mundane. It simply means the service can not cope with it within normal resources. So they might want to cancel annual leave. Move staff around. Or ask for army assistance. All may require deceleration of a major incident.

It seems pretty niave that we would be heading towards not being in a free movement of people arrangement and yet have no plan to increase border security outside of the recognised points of entry!

I'm wondering if, in a few months' time, we'll see reports on the French TV of Englanders being smuggled across the Channel in small boats - and landed a bit further further along the beach from Calais.

On the BBC news today it was announced that the Home secretary had decided to Immediately add 2 border force cutters to the security in the channel. These were being taken off duties off the coast of Greece.
How long does it take for 2 cutters to get from Greece to the channel, (Inc any necessary refuelling on the way)
As an aside- Who was paying for them to be in Greece in the first place? Cannot imagine Greece was- Cheque would bounce for sure:ambivalence:

As I understand it, the principle of the Schengen zone is that people can travel throughout it without border checks..But the quid pro quo is that people have to carry ID. Asylum seekers in northern Europe, by virtue of seeking asylum can't have appropriate ID as they have not claimed and been granted asylum and been given a new Union ID.

That being the case, the Union is choosing to ignore it's own laws by allowing states to choose to not enforce one of the most important principles of the Schengen agreement. Yet Europhiles seems to consider flouting basic laws is acceptable if enforcing the law is inconvenient.

I think HMC Seeker was sitting in Gibraltar this morning in same spot she was in about 4 weeks earlier. I imagine that might be her usual off duty berth. Even if she left this morning with AIS off, she couldn't be in the channel much earlier than 4th January.

I don't know about HMC Protector but think she was based around Lesvos as recently as mid. December. It would take about 9-10 days minimum without any stops, no idea what her max. range is without refuelling. I assume that Border Force didn't start to bring her back a couple of weeks ago.

HMC Valiant is still sitting in Perama, near Athens so unlikely to be back before mid. January.

I can't see how they are immediately adding 2 cutters. I expect it's politician speak for we've now re-tasked them, taking immediate effect (though they aren't actually able to carry out the duty for quite some time :D).

To be honest, I missed a quote that it was immediate. I only saw something saying that they were being re-deployed but not saying how long that would take. I guess that they may well bring HMC Vigilant down to join HMC Searcher in the channel as an immediate boost.

So is this classic short term thinking and likely to make the problem worse? Previously the Cutters were helping stem the flow at source, coming into Europe. Unless the current deployment was zero percent effective (if so why were we doing it?), then more migrants will now successfully cross into Europe, and hence in due course more make it to Calais.
Great thinking.
(But why would it be a surprise for the Government to do things for short term populist headlines which actually cause longer term damage?)
