Has a sailing yacht been nicked (yet?)

It's fairly "easy" to put someone in a "rib" and say drive in a straight line that way... A yacht will be a lot harder...

There were some rather odd claims on here that they didn't even get put on the "rib" until Galway across the channel then called for help as they got put on... Not that I have actually seem anywhere reliable that claimed that... And since there were boats detained / rescued in French waters... Seems like internet fokelore.

It's busy at the moment because:

Dark nights make it 'easier' not to be spotted (except the military has radar capably of tracking a tennis ball!)

Brexit is looming and if you want to be in the country before we switch on border guards and whatever else people assume is coming you gave less than 100 days left

The weather is remarkably good

The majority of the passages are being kept short.

There was a suggestion they should be taken by the RNLI back to France. But that would take an asset longer. No-one said once they are handed over to border force they will get to stay. I've read "Iranian" migrants on most MSM... Not sure if they can claim asylum.

I'd avoid leaving it inflated where it can be easily borrowed. Certainly with fuel and engine.

You can render boats like that useless fairly easily... Take the pump, let down a tube. Take spark plug lead. Take fuel line. Padlock through things. Just make it awkward... So they will nick someone elses!

So even if your point about Calais area of France were to be slightly valid (for which you have offered no evidence), there is a lot of “Europe” that is not North East France.

Yes its terrible. Blood and violence everywhere, teeming with brown people. The locals cant cook, speak funny and Drive On The Wrong Side Of The Road.

What makes you think the criminal people traffickers are stealing dinghies from Calais marina?

My experience of "Europe" is that a boat is more at risk from being broken into or stolen in the UK.

Has anyone done any research to find the source of these dinghies and outboards? Some of the dinghies look quite new. Are they being bought new for the X-channel journey, I wonder.

As for the outboards, the serial number would tell you where and when they were supplied. Seem unlikely to me that they would be bought new - nicked or s/h?

One article a couple of days ago mentioned that the o/b was "small" at 10hp. That seems big to me for a tender o.b, and would be quite a weight to lug down a beach un-noticed.

Of course the Telegraph may have meant an inflatable or they may be putting out fake news. . but before Christmas the BBC reported someone stole a fishing boat from Bolougne and drove into Dover.

When we were on Fecamp the year before last there were a very large number of black (Africans? guessing by their skin tone and clothes) riding about on a very odd variety of bikes in the industrial estates just inland. I got the feeling they were not French born. To me it's simply a matter of time before someone unties a boat and motors across the channel. No ned to sail.

As to accusations this is better in the Lounge, I asked the question because I want to visit Calais next season. It has always been a favourite of mine so I will be very sad if the security situation has changed.

Go enjoy and stop worrying , I not visit Calais for 10 years unless thing have changed there no way anyone can steel your boat as long as your around a couple of hours around high water .

This article is behind a paywall but given that what I could read says they landed the "dinghy" on a beach I suggest that "sail" is being used here in a figurative sense and like all the other recent crossings this involves outboard-powered inflatables. If these were stolen (which I've not seen any reports that they were) it probably wasn't by the migrants but by people taking their money for passage so your thieves may well be french citizens.

Asking about security at a marina that you've heard has been targeted by thieves is fair enough.

Given there have been no thefts of sailing boats in this context that I'm aware of, this post serves only to state an opinion that migrants are highly likely to be thieves and I don't think that's the kind of discussion to be having on a sailing forum

Many of us use outboards of a similar size. Some are no doubt stolen but, there are lots of cheap ribs/tenders and outboards on second hand sites. When passengers are paying £1k plus each, a cheap dingy and outboard is just part of the overhead for the traffickers.

There is one sailing boat that has been used by these migrants to cross the channel that I know of. Its a large catamaran that was wrecked on the beach near Folkestone and was then towed upside down to Dover. It has been up on the hard just in front of the yacht club next to the slipway ever sinse,or what is left of it is.I had a Cinnamon Island curry on Boxing day and it was still there then.

Got a link? There was the cat they nabbed at chichester a couple of years ago but (a) that was chichester, not folkestone and (b) it wasn't stolen, it belonged to some dodgy british crook who was charging for passage.

If as you say there is a case of a sailing yacht being stolen by migrants then this thread becomes relevant and it would be interesting to see where it was stolen from

This cat was wrecked about a month ago and I have not seen any pics of it in the news. I have seen it and looked over it myself. Name Anneliese something of Rye. Was ketch rigged but dismasted in the wreck. Twin Kubota diesels. Im down that way next week and will have another look.
