Is driving a planing boat at displacement speed a false economy?

Mike, yes CAT do measure in fuel consumed rather than hours. Just sold a 65 SD trawler style boat in the US. Had 2000 hours , chap didn't bat an eye , experienced trawler / long distance type and recanted that on these CAT's 100,000 gallons is about the time they will look to at least take oil samples and take any action from there, this boat had consumed 20,000 gallons so far in five years, it will be another 20 years before these engines will be ready for a good looksee, assuming well maintained. As the chap himself said , at my age I will be dead before that happens. I guess the point being it depends on what type of boat you will be selling down the line how the hours will affect the value.

A production planning boat with high hours will for sure take a bigger hit, a SD trawler it won't make any difference, actually would probably would raise more questions the lower the hours and some nervousness why so few hours and the lack of use etc, the type of SD / Trawler buyer is generally more accepting of higher hours and to some extent his mindset / experience is in a different arena to that of a low usage/houred production planning boat buyer, (present company excluded) :-)
