appearing to come from known senders which just say "Here is the file" or "Here is your picture" or "Here is your archive". They all have attachments which appear to be in .pif format. I received six this morning including one purporting to come from our regional RNLI organiser (I'm a Branch Chairman)

yep, lots of these about.

Even worse are the latest ones I'm getting:

'your email account at name@yourdomain has been suspended due to suspicious activity. More information in the attached file, thanks, the mydomain team'

Of course, the attached file is actually the virus.

Bin 'em, straight away, without opening any attachments.

Steve's link is right - I always go straight to <A target="_blank" HREF=http://us.mcafee.com>http://us.mcafee.com</A> to check out anything suspicious.

definatly a virus so do not open!!!
Do you not have a firewall this would pick up and inform you that this type of email is a virus so you don't open the attachment.

a good site is www.mcafee.com.
with the exchange rate at the moment pay through the USA site and not GB

Comes as either a *.pif or *.zip attachment.

Almost certainly all the people from whom you had such an e-mail have been infected by the worm.

Symantec have just upgraded it to a level 4.

In fact it's not a particularly vicious one and will effect repairs files damaged by some of the other more recent worms, its real difficulty lies in the fact that it totally chokes internet servers, backbone and branches.

You may have noticed things working more slowly during the last 48 hours - that's Netsky and its variants.

We bought the latest edition of McAfee last month so all should be well even if anyone has opened one (which I doubt)

If it's a month old it won't detect it unless you update the McAfee DAT file

Less and less likely nowadays. Usually it is a third party that has both the receiver and what is shown as the sender, in their adress book that is the infected one. This is one of the reasons for the rapid spread. - You can't write to the sender and say "you are infected" and stop it spreading further.

I use Norton but I also use Mailwasher which looks at the emails on the ISP server. I have now bought Mailwasher Pro, not very expensive, and that is very good at marking spam etc. I have a 'friends' list which is comprehensive and make sure I kill all unwanted mail before I let it into my machine.
