Another way of looking at it (apart from purchase price and running costs) is to ask yourself how much accommodation (and stowage) you actually NEED. If you want 1 double cabin aft you need at least 30' but 34'+ will sail much better (e.g. Dufour 34). If you want 2 doubles aft you need at least say 36' but 40' will sail much better (e.g. Dufour 40). If you can make do with forecabin/saloon berths alone then under 30' may be just the ticket! My advice is don't get a bigger boat then you actually need for what you want to do.
