An update.
I decided not to go for a paint solution because foundry slag had pitted the pig-iron.
Following Uber's post I called Dynatrol for advice and was pointed in the direction of their 3125 wax product which was duly ordered.
I had already chipped the rust scale off the ingots which took a good two days work. Wire brushing was easier although it did for my angle grinder.
Application was by brush in two stages:
The surface is waxy, but easier to handle than if waxoyl had been used. The pigs are now back on board the the sole is back down and the Dynatrol hadn-prints have been cleaned up with a white spirit soaked rag.
