Hi all,

I have just had Iroko grabrails made for Hermees,
Can I leave the wood bare like teak, or should I paint It,

Cheers Rich.

Just found this on Wiki,
It is a very durable wood; Iroko does not require regular treatment with oil or varnish when used outdoors. Although it is almost as durable as teak it does not have the same stability

It dries and cracks, if left untreated, treat it to oil or some saturation treatment.

It does crack but normally because it has a lot of internal stresses in it which can cause it to fail when cut as planks. There shouldn't be any problem like that with a grab rail.

Hi Rich, would be very interested to know where you got the new grab rails made. Looking for some replacements on my Senior 27 and want to stay with traditional wood, such a better feel than cold stainless..lol

Ready made teak grab rails are available from various suppliers such as Onward Trading and KJ Howells. However you will probably need them custom made to replace existing rails. Not difficult to make and teak or iroko is readily available from Howells or Robbins.
