Irish Sea - sailing tips

Greystones is open as others have said. There were issues in the past with the developers wanting to keep people out. Now they just want your money (check the price on their website to avoid shocks). Also beware of Greystones if heavy weather from E or NE.

Marinas around Dublin are expensive. If you want to go to Dun Laoghaire try ringing the clubs to see if you can get a mooring or a night on one of their pontoons.

East Link bridge on the Liffey carries an awful lot of traffic, so opening it has a major impact on the roads for quite a distance around - hence the reluctance to open it. Not sure Dublin City Moorings' pontoon has re-opened yet.

East Coast of Ireland easy to navigate. Banks from Dublin south, but well marked. Tides have an impact from Rockabill south. Beware that you can meet Atlantic swells at Carnsore Point. Few offshore rocks to SW of that, so time for a bit of focus on navigation at that stage.

Carlingford Lough scenic. Good drinking village. Rip-off Heath Robinson marina. Less tide in the entrance than at Strangford Lough :)

Good marina in Ardglass as an alternative to Peel, but Peel well worth a visit.

Strangford Lough scenic, but you could end up spending a lot of time there.

Strong tides in North Channel but they ease off as you get past South Rock.

Bangor is a very good marina in the centre of town with lots of facilities and transport links.

Rathlin Island well worth a visit, but the tides around there are in the same league as Portland Bill & Corryvreckan.

Graystones is reported to be 24 houe but details are scant and I havn,t got down there yet.
Poolbeg marina in Dublin city is a great stop over and doesn,t require a bridge lift, below the East link.
Follow the Dublin Port Leisure Craft directions for safe passage.

We went Loch Linnhe to Carlingford Lough last year. Rathlin Island is interesting but the harbour is rather lumpy in W winds. Portrush is delightful but you are likely to have to raft up. Excellent pub within 20 metres...... Glenarm was an interesting town and a very helpful marina. Strangford Lough is definitely worth the detour.
