Irish Diesel

Amazing the price we still pay here for road diesel, given the price in Ireland I would happilly forgo "red diesel" for their road diesel!

It's not so much the price, it's finding the blooming stuff.

If you haven't already, get a copy of the Irish Cruising Club's sailing directions for the South and West coast it has a wealth of information and phone numbers, some bits are a little out of date, as most of the places we visited had V buoys, although not always in the best places for the weather, so be prepared to drop the hook.

Problems we had over there (sailing from Dingle to Kinsale) were:

Rubbish and getting rid of the stuff. There is a rubbish tax in Ireland on the quantity you throw away, so most of the bins in towns have bars across them to stop you thowing bags of rubbish away, but the round ones on the street twist off...so, one person stands in front of the bin, another lifts the top off and a third puts the gash bags in the bin.

Water, usually available for quays, but bear in mind most of the quays are fishing quays, so you usually have to wait your turn, but don't be afraid to ask if you're running out of water, as long as you don't take too long they'll usually let you jump in.

Carrier bags. Remember to take carrier bags whenever you go shopping, a lot of places simply don't have them and other places you have to pay...sometimes you might be able to scrounge a box, but don't bank on it

Weather forcasts, Valencia Radio broardcast the weather forcast, but it's delivered so fast and it's done by headlands and it's not always correct (but then again where is?) you can phone them and it's easier to take it down /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Diesel, finding somewhere you can get it easily.

It's a fantastic cruising ground, and the sailing is excellent

Thanks to all. Very helpful, as ever.

The carrier bag tip is a good one, particularly as we tend to use them as rubbish bags. Will pop into Tesco's and load up before we go. It used to be that it was condoms that you could not get in Ireland, they are every where now, but you cannot get carrier bags without a fight.
