There was a warning in recent YM article about the difficulty of obtaining gas in Ireland, on account, I think, of bottles not being compatible with UK fittings. The only time I have tried to obtain gas (Camping Gaz 904) in Ireland (Crosshaven) there was no problem. Can anyone tell me exactly what the difficulty is, please? Is it because are hardly any outlets for any particular brand of bottled gas? And if so, can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks.

Probably because it's camping gaz rather than calor. I changed my system to camping gaz when leaving GB as that seemed to be the supplier of choice elsewhere.

Problem is not with the gas, but with the bottles. Red Calor bottles cant be refilled here except with huge difficulty as they aren't officially sold. Camping Gas is no problem , nor are the yellow Calor Gas and Flogas bottles .

Same applies to Blue Calor Butane bottles: they can be refilled at main depots but are not available at retail outlets. The connectors are different. Camping gaz is not a problem.

I was unable to change my Motorhome 6kg Calor propane bottles in NI. There were a few Calor agents, but they only sold 11kg propane bottles that didn't fit the locker. In the end I got the bottle refilled in Eire for a fraction of the cost of a replacement (about 10 quid, rather than 20 odd quid). Given that I buy bulk lpg for the house at 41p (+5%vat) a ltr (approx. 1/2 kg) they were still making a small profit.

The full range of cylinders and suitable regulators for both ROI and NI (just scroll down) here http://www.calorgas.ie/gas-cylinders/cylinder-range/
More info and supplier locations available on the Calor Ireland web site.
The main difference between ROI and UK (including NI) is the connection on the propane cylinders which in ROI are similar to the small blue butane cylinders in the UK.
Any specific questions feel free to PM me.

Declaration of interest, I work for Calor in ROI and NI.
