That is true but it does give a good indication of the type. The variations between boats of the same type are not likely to be huge. Our 24 has ranged from 0.899 to around 0.908 depending mainly on the sails used with most coming in around 0.9 ish.
I think Judders could conclude that the Feeling 720 at 0.802 doesn't look like it would be a particularly fast boat, with a similar but slightly lower rating than a Sonata.
Whilst I agree there are some variations by type it does give a reasonable metric to compare the boats and takes some of the objectivity out of it. It can be quite useful if buying a boat and someone is claiming how well their boat goes to have a little bit of fact around their opinion.
