I’m viewing a 30’ GRP sailing yacht in Ipswich later this week. If it is as good as the advert says then things will start to get expensive...

If we become rash and make an offer that is accepted, does anyone know of a reasonable and reputable local-ish surveyor to do the necessary pre-purchase survey that will also be accepted by the insurance co.

I’ve encountered surveyors who are determined to put off purchasers, others who are determined to increase their scope and bill. I’m after an honest one this time please!

Many thanks in advance

We used Guy Simmons of GMS Marine Surveys for our purchase based at SYH a few years ago, following a recommendation to us. We found him to be very thorough, happy to be watched and quizzed by first time yacht buyers (though long term sailors and dinghy racers) and to be contacted with any questions following receipt of his report, which wasn't necessary. I thoroughly recommend him.

Always appears to be a lot to pay for a cut and paste exercise. Maybe I’m lucky but I’ve never paid for a survey that has shown up a problem that was new to me, or would affect my insurance.
