Ipswich, gotta love it. Hmmm.

And now I can start again. Freshly laundered by a month of Norwegian waters. OK, so I wasn't sailing, but anyway.

Well, today I discovered that the Steamboat Tavern (New Cut West- come out of Haven and turn left) does some decent grub too. I only had the Veggie chilli cheesy nachos, but they were bluddy lovely. The veg seemed to be homemade and tasty, and for the price (less than £4) it was a good, filling portion.

I'd say I'd go again, but there was no doubt anyway, it's my local (along with the Nelson of course).

Good news about the beer in Butterman's too, thankyou.

Pink House Chinese take-away. Not sure of the street name, but it's just opposite Suffolk College (OK, so it's got a new name, but I don't remember that either), up from Neptune Quay.
Have to say this place makes some pretty poor tucker. The veggie spring rolls were actually rather nice, so I was optimistic about the main stuff. But sadly the veggie chow mein was overloaded with white pepper (a big no no in my book), and the sweet and sour tofu was excessively sweet- probably made with the same old ready mix gunk that is often used in these places. Mind you, I am not really a big fan of S&S anyway, but felt like a change last night.
I'd only return there at a push.

Ipswich update.

OK, so I enjoy doing this, even if it gets little attention, but my view is... if you're going to Ippy, you need all the help you can get, so:
Baipo, the oldest Thai in town, on Orwell Street, is definately back on form and probably the best of them now.
Poplar Fish bar at the bottom of Woodbridge Rd was a bit down on it's standards this week.
Lord Nelson's beer is as good as ever, but the food is getting more variable- generally pretty good, but had a bad plate of Cod'n Chips this week- the bar maid could smell it over the bar! The cook would've changed it, but I wasn't so hungry.
Penny's, that used to be D-Tapas on St Nicholas St is now AWFUL. I had the worst possible tortilla and a crumby portion of manchego (supposedly) in what tasted like cooking oil; such a shame, as D-Tapas it was great.

The Dove on the corner of Dove St and St Helen's St (just past the college from Neptune Quay) is now officially the No 1 pub around- what a selection of beers! And cheaper Adnams than "elsewhere"- Broadside £2.50/pint. Guest beers galore, CAMRA E Anglia/Suffolk pub of year 06. Really simple and pleasant (hearty) veggie chilli. A proper pub.

Watch out for a Butterman's update very soon...

Re: Ipswich update.

Was drinking theWhitstable last night, thought I'd only have 1 and head off, but after my 3rd... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Ipswich update.

And sadly, I must now update my Butterman's opinion with a less positive one. Just been there for lunch with the family, and I am most disappointed. After our previous visit I was impressed, but now, it's just so-so, and with some quite poor failings. Yes, they do have Beck's Alco free beer, which is a plus, but...

My nephew's children's fish'n chips had numerous (stiff) bones in it, which, ok, is a bit PC of me to comment on, but...
The Stilton Mushrooms (sure it was plural on the menu) was a single, fairly small one with some breadcrumbs with a mild Stilton taste.
And to me, most infuriating, was the chips with my cod'n chips were heavily salted when they arrived, despite the salt on the table, and when mentioned to the waiter, I was told the chef does this as "chips don't have any taste otherwise"!!! Some people don't like salt, some have health issues, but when it's on the table, can't we have the choice!!?!! Leave pre-salting to MacD's please, this is not a fast-food joint. Otherwise, still friendly service in a nice location, but I go to a restaurant for food. OK.
