If an engine fails or a prop fouls, just how does an IPS boat maneuver when running on only one engine? On a single shaft one still has a rudder - but what's the procedure on IPS?

What happens on joystick systems? Does one revert to the throttle control and helm? How controlable is it for close quater maneuvers such as berthing, or is there a tendancy for the boat to spin around a bit?

I'd love to know from folks who've actually played with an IPS boat when simulating and engine failure. Thanks in advance.

Particularly interested in informed responses from end users with IPS experience, rather than the standard ips sales pitch from the trade, but that would be interesting too. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The Fjord 40 owner (with D6 & IPS), which suffered two engine failures within the first year when touring from Factory to Norway... stated that it was an 'interesting' experience.... not easy to manouver at all ... but then again which dual engine boat when under single engine control is... in an article for a Scandinavian magazine he stated that you could not use the joystick control.

Re: IPS twin - manoeuvring on only one engine???

I would think and this has been confirmed in dive master post that the joy stick would become U/S. the IPS is basically an electronic engine leg management program, you push the joy stick the way you want to go and it works out what engines need to be where to do that, now with one engine it would not work, so you are down to similar to a out drive scenario, a twin out drive with the lose of one drive is not too bad, limited turning and a bow thruster in this case is a god send.
Now I said similar!
the IPS does not move the boat with quite the same manoeuvrability as an out drive, its more like a cross between out drive and shaft and you have no rudder.

I had a turbo go, on an IPS boat I was on, the boat went into emergence running so could still use the IPS, but I did run her up the river on one engine and had no problems, got her within 4 feet of pontoon before putting the IPS on. The Volvo guy on the boat said you can't do any damage more damage to engine, and I was to use it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Put it this way I now want to go and have a play and see what it WILL do. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ooooh ... please do, but remember tha the other engine may have been affected too ....and in 'safe mode' it will not rev above 1500 RPM /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

So do keep those rev's down and

[/ QUOTE ]That's great powerskipper, thanks. Yes that's what I'd like to know too (eg getting back into a finger berth on one IPS drive, or coming along side). Tks also divemaster.

Re: IPS twin - manoeuvring on only one engine???

I can tell you exactly what happens when one engine goes as it happened to me several times this year but electronically. I won't bore you with the problem specifically as its one of those Volvo/IPS voltage problems that never gets diagnosed but every so often my starboard engines failes to respond, in that the engine is ticking over but you don't have drive or revs, so when I use the joystick to move forward no problems as the port engine works okay but when I move the joystick side ways the boat just goes backwards or forwards. A real nighmare I can tell you especially when you are trying to berth as you have a tendency to smash into the pontoon.

If you take over on the main controls she handles pretty well on one engine to be fair and you use it like it was an out drive boat.

Hope this makes sense.

You dont actually have to DRIVE the boat do you?

Re: IPS twin - manoeuvring on only one engine???

Don't be silly where would the fun be in that, one has to consider the day when one can talk to the controls and ask it to berth itself! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gifAs they say boatings the best thing in the world its just the last 10 feet... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: IPS twin - manoeuvring on only one engine???

The last 10 feet is my favourite bit. Like flying - it's the landings and take offs that are the best bits.
