Chum is about to purchase a boat with D6 375 HP IPS engines.
Aprox 700 hours.
UK boat.Not a lot of service history.
Anything obvious to look for by the purchaser ..?

Based on all the info circulating in here, probably wise to deduct from the ideal price the cost of two new drives ? :rolleyes:

Survey by someone who knows IPS essential. They can bite you in the pocket.
If given a clean bill of health service them to the letter.
Check the oil regularly and if you see any milkiness get it out of the water and serviced without delay.

However IPS boats are lovely. They steer sharply like an out drive boat so they are fun even in a big flybridge. But they are planted like a shaft drive boat.
They are economical on fuel and accelerate onto the plane easily. They track with the autopilot even at slow speeds.
If they have the joystick option it can be handy like a bowthruster is. As long as you can drive it properly (ie Without it) and don’t over rely on it.
Manoeuvring is more like an out drive boat - all about the wheel - not like shafts where you rarely touch it.

IPS is the future and it’s been here for about 15 years.

Horror stories on here, don’t reflect the reality out there.

Generally very few problems with well maintained engines and IPS drives.

People who have them seem to love them.

If your mate is buying a boat as well as a survey an engine and drive inspection by a very experienced marine engineer who is trained and experienced on IPS and D6 is essential. Probably an authorised Dealer.
 
What boat? IPS should fit to the hull construction...Often the IPS Units are to small for the boats to keep the price low and make them competitive on the market...
 
For someone so risk adverse I'm amazed he drives a single engine boat - hasn't he heard the horror stories of single engines?? :) :)
I’ve heard that if you have an engine failure in a single engine boat you don’t have any means of getting home! This sort of insanity must stop! ???

Good chance may well be involved with bringing this boat home. Its virtually the owners first boat.
Would like to know of any warning signs of impending doom before departure. Short journey on inland waterway before a trip down the East coast back to civilization.
Boat is a 2006 with a Spanish builder.
Presume there should be no warning lights, codes or stuff on displays ?
With an outdrive no way to check gearbox oil condition is there some way of checking fluids on IPS while boat is in water. ?

How often should these engines/ drives be serviced and what should have been done at last service.

The D6 engines are standard Volvo stuff. Usual checks, oil, fuel and cooling water

The most critical thing is you dip the oil on the IPS units. Apart from the level check for milkiness. If the oil is milky don’t move the boat. Water in the oil kills the clutch cones which is expensive.

Otherwise, as stated above, don’t try and drive it like a shaft boat or you’ll come a cropper.

And beware. You might like it.
