Is it possible to run the Navionics Chart software on an iPod Touch?

I like iPods but don't want an iPhone, but have seen the chart software on an iPhone and it looks good.

I'm not sure if an iPod Touch has all the necessary gubbins though.

Thanks

Mark

Navionics and iPod touch

For it to be of any use your iPod touch would need GPS, I think it would run that app, but not much use without position info. Another approach is to get a cheaper and IMO better Andriod type phone that will also run the Navionics app. If you go to the Navionics web page http://www.navionics.com/MobileMarineFeatures.asp?MobileType=Android they list all the currently supported Andriod phones. I would imagine that many more are suitable and that the list given is simply the ones they're tried and verified it on, and they are cheaper than the overpriced Apple gear. Personally I will never get any Apple equipment as it is all much too proprietry and restrictive.

Cheers

Paul

Agree with Shaddickp, gat an Android type phone, I have the HTC Hero and with the software upgrade, it runs Navionics a treat and with the built-in GPS, very accurate. Most impressed, espacially as I'm not a fan of chartplotters (luddite or cheapskate, go on, you choose!!). Be aware of battery life, though, measured in hours -and not many! - so a plug in charger, say a ciggy lighter type is essential.

Android might be the way forward.

I don't really want it to run for too long, I'm a GPS and plot on a chart sort of person. Just every now and again I'd like to see a real-time WTFAI plot on a plotter.

We have a little notebook that we had the Imray charts on this year, but never used it cause it was too much faff to get it all out and rig it up. So something that I could turn on for 5 mins have a look at and then put away for the rest of the day would suit me.

I'm looking to upgrade my phone anyway, so perhaps this is the way forwards. Just don't want an iPhone!

You can buy a good condition used Iphone 3GS for less than an IPod Touch.

That sorts your GPS problem, and gets you the best app on the market.

Don't listen to all these Android salesman. After 20 years in the IT industry with Microsoft and Nokia products everywhere in my life I have finally seen the light! Binned the lot and bought a Mac for home , IPhone for travelling, Macbook for the boat and iPad for fun. Peace, integration, stability and glamour at last. Best of all is that I havent seen the blue screen of death for years now.:):)

Just don't want an iPhone!

I was the same for years... until something changed my mind, and I got one in April, (Unlocked 2nd hand on ebay).

Immediately converted, and dont know why I put up with the hassle of the other phones I owned for so long.

Androids may compete with the iPhone for useability - I dont know.

Good luck with whatever you do.

I got an Iphone this year and love it. Best way to waste loads of time at work ever invented :)

I also got Navionics and used it this summer crusing around the west country. Invaluable when the vis was zero, and will drive me to get a chart plotter at the helm in due course. (I know your not suppose to use the Iphone for navigation, but when you can "see" yourself walking up and down on the dock on the chart with it, its got to be fairly good.)

Only down side is it does not have the full fucn of a chart plotter and a lot of the marina information is either way out of date or non-existent. But that is Navionics, not Iphone.

Great pieces of kit, highly recommend them. (Great weather apps too, including XC, shipping AIS is interesting as well!)

Can I just add - iPhone - great bit of kit - bum if you get it wet - get an iDry ... as demonstrated on the Scuttlebutt Cherbourg meet - it fits the iPhone 3g, 3gs & 4 ... whilst it doesn't float, it does keep your phone Dry - and hence usable in a wet cockpit.

Oh - absolutely NO connection with them - just happy owner of 2 iDrys ... (two iPhones in the crew list!)

re: Navionics on an iphone - very impressed generally, but it did fail to determine location on a fast ferry on the thames this week. Kept trying for 30 mins but no joy. May have been because I kept in my pocket most of the time - needs a few mins to get a fix. erm, just thought, maybe the channel & holland chart does not go that far north. Edit: does appear to chart the Thames up to Teddington.

re: iphone - I was scathing about apple products for years. Always went for alternatives on MP3 and phones. Kids got ipod touches - amazing little gadgets (esp. browsing the web via wifi). Got an iphone4 recently and have to say it is an amazing bit of kit - both funtionality wise and in terms of looks. It is absoluetly solid - like holding a slab of glass with a metal band around it. Best bit of kit I own.

If it is the iPhone that is the issue (as in it being your phone) get a 2nd hand one and use it like an iPod touch and have no SIM card.

Or get an iPad with 3G and inbuilt GPS

Thanks for that tip, just ordered one.
I navigate regularly at night with my Iphone, sometimes I dont even have the relevant chart on board,am I dreadful ?

iPod touch gps yes you can..

Jailbreak it use roqy Bluetooth and yes you can. Prefer this to getting my iPhone wet and Bluetooth puck can sit outside with me inside getting good signal.

Also allows me to use non gps iPhone (2g) for satnav apps.

Do not jailbreak without knowing what u r doing . Very simple but has implications depending upon what code you are on.

When I sober up will post exactly what I use. Just waiting for latest jailbreak on iPad to do the same
