hi

one easy way to do this is buy an iTrip transmitter. This device plugs into your iPod and transmits on an FM frequency which can be picked up by any FM radio. You can also listen to music from your iPod through the car radio too.

These cost around £20-£30. Check out ebay.

Don't claim to be an expert but I just take the iPod and a mini speaker set (Harmen JBL on tour speakers bought from Amazon) plus their 240V chargers in case the batteries go flat. Works wonderfully even in cockpit.

The Skipper was dubious at first but is now a convert. Just need time to add his huge CD collection to the iPod via laptop at home - a job for the long cold winter evenings!

The output from the headphone jack on the I Pod is analogue, and so you can cobble a cable together to plug into the headunit or mini hifi- it just takes the correct wiring to the respective plugs- you can buy most set ups- usually 3.5mm jack to phono plugs, or 3.5 to 3.5 Jack. I have a couple of leads for use at home and on the boat, I also have an I trip type of set up, but you get far better sound with hard wires IMO. You can also get 12V cig lighter leads on E Bay for not muc cash.

Sorry to sound an idiot but that is because I am....
Would this set up be permanently attached to the boat or is it designed to be worn like a walkman?
I ask because Sailorgirl talks of 240 v chargers However Alex talks of jack and phono plugs.
By the way just to show I know something......according to the radio today there is now an Ipod for females which vibrates!!! Of course it could be April 1st

Thanks folks Briani

I think its all been said ,but here are a couple of really useful websites for ipod stuff:
1. ipodlounge.com (A bit geeky,but its all there)
2.scifihifi.com/podworks (just type podworks into google) For a fiver you can buy the software that will allow you to transfer all your ipod music files to a computer-useful if you ever have to replace the old laptop and all its files and do not want to have to reload all those cds.

There are posts on mobo chat in last 2 weeks (see thread started by Derf I think) with more info. I have ipodded our boat with multiple plug-in points (jack sockets). Have removed all the CDs, yay!

1. Those iTrip radio transmitters are just about ok but the signal quality is pretty poor. I dont use them, bit too crappy really, imho. They also transmit a signal drawn from the headphone jack on the iPod (see 3. below re this)

2. Much better is to use a cable connecting your iPod to the line-in or CD/Aux in on your boat hifi

3. You can get the signal out of your ipod from the top (headphone jack) or the bottom. If you use the top, the signal is downstream of a small equaliser circuit. This makes the signal less bass-ey and suitable for headphones. If you connect to the bottom of the ipod the signal is pure, much better. BUT you can control the volume of the top output from the iPod itself, whereas the volume if using the bottom output can only be controlled using the boat's hifi volume knob. So, pays yer money and makes yer choice. We use the top ipod output when lying on sunbed with ipod in hand so we can control volume from right there, but otherwise we plug intot he bottom of the ipod for better sound.

4. The post on mobochat has links to the connector for using the bottom ipod output
