I am looking for a pair of pc style active speakers to use with my ipod when on board.
Any recommendations for active speakers that, with the transformer removed, will work from the boats 12v supply with reasonable volume and quality.
Thanks

do you have a radio? if so use an FM transponder. you can then use the ipod from anywhere on the boat providing the transponder has a battery option. If not take a trip to Curry's there are loads of suitable docking systems there. Maplins do a multi 12v transformer so you can use the station from a ciggy lighter socket.

i use an Itrip transmitter
its able to use all fm frequenses cost about £28 squids would also suggest you have the 12v >< mini usb lead this enables you to charge & listen @ the same time.
the transmitter uses the ipod battery therefore reduces capacity / life 2 about 4 hrs unless the mini usb lead is used

before my holiday this year I bought these speakers from Logitech

The iPod slots in and plays through the speakers. The speakers have internal batteries that I charged when on shore power, and last about 10hours. Leaving the iPod in the speakers whilst plugged in also charged up the iPod.

I was also happy with the sound quality.

I chose this solution as it is portable and can be used in other places, eg my terrace at home when having BBQ, ....

I installed a Sony Stereo Car Radio to the boat, with 2 fixed speakers and two moveable ones for use in the cockpit. The stereo has a front socket for connecting an IPOD!
