Hopefully the following may be of interest for some since I have seen this mentioned previously on these forums and there seems to be some interest around Navionics and other sat nav type apps
I just got myself an 8G IPOD Touch for 150 (Iphone without phone or camera) to run Navionics and other sat nav apps. Of course, also handy for watching films, music and Wifi.
The Ipod Touch and older Iphones are not fitted with internal GPS hardware and Apple have restricted the devices so that it is not possible to use an external bluetooth GPS receiver. However, if you Jailbreak either the Touch or Iphone with 'Black Rain' (Google it) you can use a new bit of software off Cydia (Cydia automatically installs from the Jailbreak software )'Roqy Bluetooth' to enable the Touch or older Iphone to link to an external bluetooth GPS.
I am no expert on this and it was very simple!
Be aware that for the latest firmware on Iphones and Touch (which I have) you have to run the Jailbreak software from a laptop each time the battery expires, or you reset. It seems to be the consensus that there will be a permanent version in the not too distant future.
I preferred to use a 150K Touch rather than a more expensive Iphone in case of an accidental splash/escape from pocket (I speak through experience...).
Currently I have only used this setup with TomTom, although I do have Navionics working with no problem. I have used other PDA nav tools previously and the Navionics Ap seems good except for the fact that you can't drag waypoints around. Also the screen is smaller than I am used to so I will see how I get on when I use it in anger come spring.
At 150 quid (less if you buy second hand) + a few quid in apps in makes a very good gadget, Xmas present to yourself.
