Hi, I'm looking for some advice. I want to buy one app and chart set (one payment) that I can use on both my iPhone and iPad. I also want to ensure that the iPad quality is good, I don't want just a magnified and blocky iPhone app running on the iPad. Naturally I want accurate charts and good functionality too.

Any suggestions which app is best given these aims?

Thanks vm

I bought Navionics for my iphone and it works also on my ipad mini. Best with the 3G Ipad, as this also has the GPS sensor.

Only annoying thing for me is the timeout, which for some reason I cannot override so it cuts out if the pad is not touched after say 4 mins, but a friends does not do this so could just be my update status.

I have Navionics and like it alot. I use a ipad with a bad elf receiver. the only issue I have is battery consumption as a 12v charger just about treads water with usage and I don't like the cable on as I have ipad on a swinging bracket so it can be used inside or out.

I have both Navionics and Imray on my I Pad.The Navionics is the I phone one that cost £18.It works very well and is perfectly acceptable on the I Pad. It covers the UK/Belgium/Holland area which is identical to the 28XG area that costs about £175 for my plotter. It has been updated for 2 years.Bear in mind that the same update for the plotter is about £100. It is unrealistic to expect free updates for a long period when paying such a small amount of money for such a large area of mapping.

I have found Navionics a bit of an irritation..

I first loaded it on my phone and initially it seemed great.. First time I tried to use it I bumped into the "sleep" problem.. My car navigation apps don't have an issue with keeping the phone awake when they are active so Navionics shouldn't either.. I mailed their support asking if there was a way to keep the screen awake without changing the global setting.. When I eventually got a reply it said they didn't have a setting and wouldn't ever have one because it bad the battery go flat.. That's brilliant but shouldn't the user have the choice? and I can always connect it to power!!..

I then got a 3G iPad mini.. Loaded the same phone app to find they significantly "cripple" the resolution in order to promote the sales of their "tablet" version.. The app doesn't even fill the screen on the iPad.. A bit disappointing considering the charts are vector so shouldn't pixelate so badly..

Maybe I am expecting too much but I'll be trying other apps in the future and not spending any more on Navionics..

AFAIK there are two versions of Navionics, one for iPhone which is obviously smaller in screen size and half the price of the iPad version which is designed for the larger screen hence the issue you are having with the upsizing on the iPad.

As to the "one payment" as said above, you buy it once (charts and app together) and then use it forever. If however you want updated charts as with every other chart manufacturer, you pay for the updates. Come on, for the cost of two paper charts every year or two you're complaining? Some perspective and the need to keep the manufactures producing charts, is required.

It's worth remembering that compared with the cost of paper charts, any of these packages is a complete bargain.

The vast amount of data that can be bought for under fifty quid is astonishing. Those who grumble should be forced to spend a season having to buy paper sheets off the shelf and they'd never moan again.

So don't feel hard done by when it comes to paying for data. But choose an app that you find easy to use and gives a good presentation.

At the moment, I'm enjoying MaxSea TimeZero on iPad. Looks like an Admiralty Chart.

Thanks very much all. I'm trying iSailor at this point, looks ok so far.

I downloaded this a few days ago for Free! and then the UK south coast (all of it inc Scilly Isles) including the channel islands for £17.49 it works on both my ipad mini with gps and the iphone. It runs as smooth as silk with impressive screens. So far so good. I will report in couple of weeks time when I have had more time to really get into it.

I think we need to remember that come the day that every thing crashes a paper chart will come in very handy , I not sure where one would stand with insurance if you didn't have a back up paper chart on board , I too have a plotter and I am looking onto iPad charts but at the same time I keep paper charts on board , ok they out of date but at less I have some thing to use if all else fails .

QUESTION for rbeange , how are you finding ISAILOR ?

I definitely agree with you. It is the best iPad nav app I have so far used for passage planning. Works fine on both iPhone and iPad but I'm not sure that you get them both for 17.49. Can you confirm that?

I got both iPhone and iPad on promotion because I have just released a book on using the app for passage planning. Details on my website.

Regards Chris.
