My latest issue of Classic Boat has just arrived, along with a piece of paper which requires me to tick a couple of boxes and send it back (at my expense) if I don't want them to use my details for advertising purposes (including passing them on to 3rd parties). This is very bad, I'm minded to cancel my subscription. I always select all the options which avoid my details being used, and would definitely have done so when I took out my subscription (a year ago). Now unless I tell them again then by default they will pass my details on. Disgraceful.

This does not make sense can you please PM me or talk to me direct so we can establish exactly what you have. There are very strict laws regarding data and IPC has to abide by them like anyone else.

I would like to get the facts straight on this as its a very complex area!

Thank you

I have just checked the address sheets for my YM PBO and CB they all have this, unfortunately I have never bothered to read them until now. As you say this is bad.

Can I please establish the facts first before you say it is bad, data is a complicated issue but if you have originally opted out then you will remain so.

Thank you

OK the facts....

On every address sheet for the 3 IPC mags which I receive there, in small print, is the following....

IPC Media Ltd ("IPC") collect personal information to process your subscription order and to gain a better understanding of our magazine readership.
We may send you details of our magazines and services. Please tick here and return to the address above if you prefer not to hear from IPC.[]
We may pass your details to other reputable companies whose products and services may be of interest to you.
Please tick here and return to the address above if you prefer not to receive such offers.[]

Surely it should be around the other way.
Tick here to give permission to pass on your details, not tick to prevent it.
Not impressed. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Richard,

I think we need a response from IPC as to exactly what happens with our personal data. So far I think we can safely say that it does indeed look 'bad'. My subscription hangs in the balance and I suggest many more along with it.

Mail data you opt out , email data you opt in.

There are no questions re the legalities it is all above board.

At the show so a short responce but making a call now so stand by.

Hhmmm.....maybe above board, but very underhand! I forsee many pi##ed off ex subscribers......

Top marks on the responses though. Very prompt despite being at the show. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I will have a copy of it in about an hour, from what I have been told it is an advert on the back of your carrier sheet, the carrier sheet is the piece of paper that has your address in.

I have been told that it is simply a piece of correspondence inviting you to renew your subscriptions should you so wish.

If you do renew we will have to process your order and handle your personal data. We are required by law to tell you we are processing this data and give you the option of opting out of written correspondence or opting in to email correspondence.

This is standard practice and as this is standard practice there are very strict laws about what we do with the data, if you do not want us to pass on your data and you have ticked the appropriate box then we are not allowed to its the law full stop.

All I will say is please read these carefully and remember you opt out of written correspondence (tick the box) and you opt in to email activity by ticking the box (so leave it blank)

When I have the piece of paper I will report on it, if you wish to discuss this please PM me and I will give you my mobile number.

Thank you

It doesnt appear to be anything to do with renewal. It is simply written below the address.
Am I supposed to return these sheets every month in order to forbid you from using my data?
Much simpler to canx the subs and buy mags from time to time at the newsagents.

Yes good, quick, replies Richard.
Thanks for that.

But... the law doesn't specify any moral stance taken by any company.

I still say it should be tick to opt in. To anything.
I'm sure the law doesn't say giving your info to anyone without specifically denying them permission to share it, allows them to do just that.
If it does, then it's a bad law.

Reputable companies should ask permission to share data, however gathered.

But then, I'm just an 'ex-pat'.
I wonder why?

Ron

Exactly!

I bought an IPC subscription (for another publication) as a Christmas present. I will not receive the sheet with the magazine and can not therefore opt out in this way. How this meant to work?

Its in the cab on its way over.....

If you bought it for Xmas you will still have been given the option of opt in opt out as its your order and you will be sent a renewal when its nearly finished.

Cheers

One question Richard - please answer YES or NO.

In your humble opinion as a marketing person, is it better to have to opt IN (to receive junk mail) or to opt OUT?

IPC seems to think it is better to effectively force us to opt OUT (if we don't, then we get bombarded), whereas I am sure that most of the readership would say the opposite.

Which is not a very good marketing strategy is it?
