Here's somthing that has been bugging me for a while. The two IPC mags much beloved of this chapter quite undertsadably run boats for the journos to play, er I mean work on, but they seem to be the wrong way round.

MBM is the mag for the normal guy - covering Consul boats, 25 footers up to the 40 footers and the odd 50 footer. MB&Y on the other hand seem to be aimed at the luxury end of the market, with the custom yachting feature and boats reviewed well and truely in the 40ft plus catagory apart from the odd interetsing one below that.

So why do MBM, the peoples mag run the £400k princess, while MB&Y choose to run the much more modest Beneteau Monte Carlo 37? Nothing wrong with either of course, and I subscribe to both mags but it seems a bit backwards.

this is not for the first time either - MB&Y have run a Nimbus Nova 30, a Sunseeker Fishing thing and of course the Flyer 12 (which was a bit more pricey I suppose). MBM have run a Phantom 42, a Broom 38 and now the Princess 42.

Any reasons?

Possibly because it's MBM that run the cruises, so they need something reasonably substantial that 3-4 staff can sleep aboard comfortably for 8-10 weeks a year without getting too intimate.

MBY just need something to blat around the Solent. Everything else is borrowed.

dv.

It's down to requirements of the mag. On MBM we run the cruising club and we need a boat that can take us, (4 staff), and all our kit for two weeks at a time. The boat is also involved in some of our practical tests, and I'm just not sure you could rig up 20 chartplotters on a 25ft sportscruiser!

Nah. Jez had a full lakesailor within reach and he bottled it. Although you and neale gave effectively the same answers and jez replied to neale (who had posted after you) he crucially failed to thank neale for the answer so I'm afraid it's at best a partial lakesailor and if jez goes back and edits now, I'm afraid he'll be up before the committee on a charge of unsportsmanlike conduct.

I dissagree, I wasnt thanking either respondant. moreover I was replying to Neils comment about chartplotters and having space of a 25fter. My suggestion was to 'hang them over the side'

Though I see that this could have been misconstrude as a comment about the crew.

Re: Blue Fin? Oh dear...

And naming it after the new IPC corporate HQ (The Blue Fin building) is shockingly cheesy....although they'll doubtless score major Brownie-points with the Publisher.

Traditionally, the choice of boat has been dictated by MBM's need for something to do MBM cruises in, the preferences of particular editors, and the fact that MBY preferred to squander the boating budget on strong lager, Class A drugs and Brazilian hookers rather than plodding round the Solent on some dreary old tub testing fish-finders.

[/ QUOTE ] Excellent stuff, though I am now feeling extremely miffed because I once made a wisecrack on here about the Magazine's boats being run into the ground by drunken hacks. One of the editors (can't remember who it was, but it was post-Isitt, you'll be relieved to hear) made an extremely po-faced reply to the effect that his journalists would never take a boat out under the influence and how could I possibly suggest anything to the contrary, even if I was only joking, etc, etc.

No sense of humour, some people. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tom

You must know that all the names of MBM boats have had some kind of corporate connection. Missing Link, Calm Voyager, Time Flies and now Blue Fin.

Thanks for the other info, It does explain the strange behaviour of the other lot down the other end of the office /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Blue Fin? Oh dear...

Oh...I assumed the names had something to do with the Editor - Kim (Missing Link), Jake (Calm Voyager) etc. Obviously not.

But I'm glad to hear office traditions are being upheld and that the "other lot" are still hoovering quantities of Dancing Dust off the arses of the ad-sales girls and free-basing Castrol R.

The wonder of the forum IPC Magazine boats (Blue Fin & the MB&Y Boat)

Re: Blue Fin? Oh dear...

We moved out of Link House in Croydon to become part of IPC magazines, some 10 years ago. So naming the boat "Missing Link" seemed rather appropriate at the time, also Kim Hollamby's (editor at the time) habit of naming boats after musical terminology were the only other suggestions

Re: Blue Fin? Oh dear...

Whike we are on the subject why did we name all MBY boats Prospector? (I think thats the right spelling but I have been on the same "tea" as Tom...)

Re: Blue Fin? Oh dear...

Richard...you really need to get out more...12.15am and you're sitting at home fiddling with your forums. Tsk.

No idea why MBY boats were called Prospector. I think it dates back to the 1890s, when Lester was just a callow youth and MBY was edited by some kindly old gent in brogues and plus-fours.

As for that "tea"...you really shouldn't be doing that on a school night...save it for when you need to take the edge off things at work.

Re: Blue Fin? Oh dear...

Was waiting for that, would it help if I told you I was sipping a gin and tonic by the pool on wireless in Antigua hence the percived late post!

But you are right about the school night feel shocking this moring and it aint no fun working in this heat...and thats not being sarcastic..
