Click on the link, search for GPS and it says this "Location Services: Location-based services via Wi-Fi and assisted-GPS"

Right, but that's just wi-fi triangulation - you can't use that for navigation..?

No it's not. It's GPS which is assisted for quick fix when in range of wifi. Popular myth, plenty of other people caught out by it.
The discussion is moot as i've already stated that Navionics isn't available for Kindle Fire yet.

It's not necessarily but a voice contract with 3GB of data will tend to include 3,000 minutes on the phone or something like that and it can be cheaper to get a data-only SIM with 3GB and voice SIM with just the 50 minutes and 500 texts a month that you need.

I don't really have much more to say about this. On that Google page I linked to, there's page after page explaining how it doesn't have GPS, including this from PC Advisor: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/tablets/3409652/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-review/ and many others. I'm not sure why you think it has..? I'm fully aware of (that is, not caught out by) the confusion surrounding the iPad GPS, and this isn't that.
It's not so much a popular myth, it seems, as just absent...

I give up, you won't click on the link I posted, you don't know what assisted GPS is, you're posting about a device that dosn't even run Navionics - yet you are convinced you are right. Here's the link one more time. But to save pointless discussions I agree 100% that you are totally and utterly right. FWIW I once asked the same question of Apple staff and the answer they gave me was wrong. Problem is that most of the manufacturers staff dont know the difference between assisted and normal gps and dont understand its significance either.

From an American site only the Fire 8.9 with 4g has GPS and that is not available here yet but I suppose one could buy it from the States. The 7" HD version available from UK Amazon did have a GPS chip but Amazon disabled it (so the tech site in the US says).There is as yet no app available on the Fire for boat navigation.

Agreed, I reckon at least six months before it's here and a bit longer before Navionics gets ported to it - if it isn't on the Nexus it's a while to wait for the Fire!

I bought SWMBO a Microsoft Surface RT for Christmas and she has not put it down since Christmas Day. It is a lovely piece of hardware and I reckon the design with kickstand and flat keyboard / screen protector is streets ahead of the iPad. With the keyboard and MS Office Suite included it is a real working machine although it's not cheap!
Having now seen the Surface RT version, I would definitely have bought the Pro version when it comes out in a week or two. Unfortunately, MS have decided not to include GPS which I think will severely limit sales. I'll wait for version 2 to see if MS re-visit this!
