iPad2+3G Questions, help please

Getting an Android tablet will save you these iFad worries.

I have a perfectly good iPhone and iPad.
I am just curious to know how my old iPod 2nd gen is able to find my position without wifi and according to the specs has no gps. Also why if it has no gps does it display the gps symbol when locating its position
I'd also like to know how wifi would help locating it's position, surely even if it knew where the wifi was coming from it would have to somehow work out its own bearing and distance from the wifi ?

Sorry, my response wasn't aimed at your specific question, Dylan. Just at how easy it is to avoid the general 'this one does this but not that, and that one does that but not the other' iPad saga by getting a tablet that does all of it and more.

The GPS could not find us when I first switched the iPad on in Greece after leaving the ferry. It asked for the 3G to be switched on and then found us quickly. No idea whether it would have found us if I had not, but it seemed unlikely. Once it knows roughly where you are it doesn't seem to care whether 3G is on or not.

I travel the world on biz and the iPad always tells me where me a@@@ is parked. You have a confused GPS Vyv!! :D

I don't have a sim card on my iPad but I do have the Navionics charts app....

The navionics chart gives me a fix when out of wifi. It is also quite accurate

I Would ecoment the app. The chart bundle for the UK is £50 and sthesame for all of Europe !!

The symbol is not the gps symbol it is the 'location services' symbol. I suspect it is remembering your last position obtained by wifi or even picked up via the computer you sync to.

My statement above is correct - only those idevices that have cellular connection capability have the gps capability. It is part of the same chip. See here http://www.isuppli.com/Teardowns/Ne...f-Materials-IHS-iSuppli-Teardown-Reveals.aspx and look for the baseband chip (including GPS).

The ipod touch has a different radio chip the http://www.broadcom.com/products/Bluetooth/Bluetooth-RF-Silicon-and-Software-Solutions/BCM4325 which has bluetooth, wifi and FM in it. No gps.

Apologies for bringing facts into the discussion.

Edit to add:

From the horses mouth:

Notes:
iPod touch only uses Wi-Fi for Location Services (if a Wi-Fi network is available).

Will the European version cover the UK too?

The app is the platform for the chart packages I think it is free.. Or at least comes with the first chart bundle ... Then you select which chart bundle you want.. I went for Europe as I have the UK gold on my chart plotter onboard..
Sadly the UK bundle is separate from the rest of Europe.. Both about £49. The detail is to the same quality although I can't find any tide flows..

In terms of data the Europe bundle seems better value as there is a huge amount of data...

I would recomend it as you can look at charts she ashore...

Tide flows

I have just looked for tide details around the straig hts of
Gibi.. There are tide heights and a couple of vectors but the very fancy tide flow hour by hour arrows that are on the latest charts loaded onto my C120 are not there..

Having said that... for only £50 it is a very good buy... The entire of the Baltic Northsea Atlantic Coast as far as The Cannaries, the north shores lof the Med as far as Lebanon ... All in one package?

This is a deal-breaker for me, I'd be interested to know for sure if Europe tidal flows are there.

Deal breaker? Surely not.

There are plenty of very cheap apps with tides and currents. Navionics is still great value without any of that data.

I have Navionics UK and Holland. Updated today on the app store. It has detailed tides and currents for the Gib area. Hour by hour.
