There was a thread back in March 2013.

I wonder if anybody has any further experiences of protective iPad cases - good or bad.

There must be loads more users on boats by now.

Someone in the marina has an Overboard case which is cheaper than the Lifeproof & is happy with it.

Not going to be used for serious navigation but prefer waterproof rather than splashproof.

Ta :encouragement:

Lifeproof for 1 and half seasons so far - although it has barely been splashed and only rained on briefly. The best bit has been the big orange floaty case that goes over the rigid waterproof bit. That has been a very useful shock absorber when it has fallen off tables.

Only downside is cost.

My sister brought her iPod out to the NW Caribbean earlier this year for navigation purposes in a waterproof case (not sure of the make).

The big issue was the iPod shutting down often due to overheating

I have just the same, the main thing is that the lifejacket allows you to bounce the Ipad about, it becomes a more useful tool.
It's very handy indeed to be able to toss the Ipad in a box of spanners, for taking snaps of what you are working on, and e'ing the pics to somebody.
However forget waterproofing, because I had to carve holes with a Stanley knife to gain access to the sockets!

I have seen the lifejacket promo videos of Ipads going snorkelling etc, and they are f ucking lies, please sue me.

I have the Lifeproof and again never submerged it, but seems far superior to others I have seen. The big advantage and disadvantage is the flap to enable you to charge it. Great to charge it in the case, but I think if it's going to leak anywhere it would be there. There is an adapter for the earlier iPads that plugs the hole and extends the port. I have one of the later iPads with the lightning connector and bought the adaptor from Lifeproof but it is smaller than the hole and although it extents the port it does nothing to aid waterproofing the access flap. I tend to leave the ipad in the case throughout the summer months and put it in the Lifejacket when taking it to the boat. I do have a spare unopened Lifeproof case that I keep meaning to put on ebay, but never get round to it.

I use freezer bags. I haven't had to test it though.

Thanks for that.

I presume you mean iPad.

Not considered overheating in a really hot climate.

I wonder if that was a one-off with an solitary iPad with a internal electrical problem perhaps.

Many thanks - must google.

PS. I suppose if it was in a Lifeproof case with the floatation collar you could always chuck it in the sea to cool it down (relatively speaking) :D

Edit:

mmm . . . not the only one to suffer with overheating:

Have used the Lifeproof Nuud for 2 seasons racing. The iPad has been skidding all over the cockpit floor with no damage, and it's taken a couple of big waves too. Expensive but good.

+ 1

Mine spends most of its time in the cockpit when on the move and has survived so far.

However, a friend of mine also bought of these from a 'random' ebay seller and it never seemed to work properly. They has since got a replacement which works properly so we suspect the first one was a fake.

Not beautiful and perhaps not what you want but it only took 20 minutes to knock up and is virtually free. I didn't set out to make a waterproof case, just something so I could sling it in a bag and cart it about safely, but it would survive a splash, and worse if packed in a ziplock bag before slipping in the case.

It's certainly not an alternative to a nuud but I don't need to use my tablet in the cockpit at sea.

Jon Ives - move over!

You're right - it's not what I want.

But, much appreciated - thanks.

I use an ipad armor-x case, about £40 from eBay. It has a very positive locking action.
I have not subjected it to total submersion, but it has been used by kids in the pouring rain all day on a motor race circuit. Filthy weather.
It didn't overheat, nothing did that day!!!! It has also been thrown around and dropped a few times.

An iPad is impossible to turn off in some cases, but you can turn a feature on that gives you access to the lock button via the screen.... quite handy.

Lifeproof case for when you MIGHT get it wet.

Overboard case for when you WILL get it wet.

Lifeproof stuff is a modern marvel of design and materials science, but one spec of sand or dirt on any of the multiple seals, and it leaks. Don't regret my phone one, it has saved the phone half a dozen times from careless use, but is prone to leaking unless in perfect condition. I don't trust mine in a wet jacket pocket, unless I have tested it in the last week.

Waterproof bag technology, i.e. Overboard and Aquapac (remember the vhf bags?) is a pain for functionality, but you can tell at a glance (squeeze) that it is still working.

If you want a second chance for your expensive gadget, life proof stuff is great. If you want to have it on deck, in dinghy, in water, in all weather, I cannot praise the overboard bag enough. It works, its cheap, and it does not become obsolete if you change gadgets.

Lifeproof nuud , best case I ever bought , had a griffin tough case before , but lots of problems using screen .

nuud excellent , use it at work around plant rooms and water , walking about in rain , and off course on the boats.

very expensive but worth every penny
